dayum E!...thats 1 helluva spill you took...heres hoping you heal well & quickly...
i never thought that the post was anything more than something to think about...theres been too many times that i have felt that i would be doing those around me a favor if i took a powder...i cant count how many times my ex-wife has said things about how much my disability has cost "us" i quality of life...even after we've been separated for 8 years she still brought that up the last time i was down there to visit my daughter,,,,
at the time, in 2000, that i made my decision to seek one last chance to live the remainder of my life trying to be happy i felt i had 2 choices,,,either take a left turn at the intersection of the street i lived on & a major highway or simply "forget" to stop and drive my mazda out in front of one of the hundreds of semi trucks that come down that hill...i decided to take the more difficult of the two choices because i couldnt leave an innocent truck driver to have to live with my demise on his mind for the rest of HIS life,,,,and i felt that, altho it would be very hard, my daughter would be better off with a father living 400 miles away that she could call anytime she needed me than a father she would visit with flowers a couple times a year,,,,there are times i do wonder if i made the right choice but once that brush with darkness passes i know i did the right thing...we all have value and all contribute to society in some small way and the world is better with us in it...

Oh, and I blame this all on Matisse. As soon as I told him my chair flies well, the control box dies as soon as I reach my hotel in Chicago...

Hey, can you email me the details on how your chair got messed up.
What was the design feature on the loaner that kicked you out?

Hey, can you email me the details on how your chair got messed up. What was the design feature on the loaner that kicked you out? From memory, the error on my joystick was "E100 SHORT/OPEN IN CONTROL BOX OR MOTOR." What's funny is it worked getting off the plane... it died when I got to the hotel. I bought a new control box ($1,600). Running fine now. They loaned me one a lot like this one. On mine, though, the front two tires were about 6" off the ground. Stopping quickly in my van made me rock forward onto them. I thought it was for getting up curbs. When I was going down my ramp, I must have slowed down or stopped near the bottom, because the thing lurched forward, which sent me flying face first. When my employees found me, the chair was still leaned forward.

I'm actually scared to fly with my TDX5 now. I use my backup chair instead. I've had a few failures like yours, but what concerned me was that 2 of them were at my house, and one of those 2 was with a new controller that I hadn't flown with. The fucking thing just died at my house. If that happens randomly when I am traveling and already at my destination, I am fucked, and maybe royally fucked if I am traveling alone and it's after hours.

Absolutely.
I found a loaner in Chicago, but get this: The loaner had a battery issue. Battery only lasted 3 hours. It died rather suddenly crossing a busy intersection the first time. Very exciting.
And then me and my broken-down chair slept in the airport Monday when weather delayed my flight home 28 hours... but that's another story.

A Quickie S-525. It's really meant to be an indoor office chair. It doesn't have much power so you have to be careful on steep ramps or curb cuts. It will go 6.5 mph on flat surfaces though. I have tilt but no lift on it.
I had no idea it would be so reliable, but it's been flawless. I think part of the reason is that it has a very simpl motor design, and it's relatively light weight--about 235. So 3 airline folks can reasonably lift it, maybe even just 2 people. When I've had a problem while on the road with my TDX, I've had the airlines fly out the spare chair and fly back my busted chair.
I guess the Hilton at O'Hare was booked? Unlike most Hilton's, they actually do have a roll-in shower room there, and it's actually pretty decent.

Damn E, looks like a lot of hurt - hope everything falls back into place... ...is the concrete okay? If it did that to you, I can only imagine the damage done unto it.

The S-525 gets some pretty ugly reviews... might be a good back-up, though. Explain to me the airlines flying your chair out to you? Over 100 flights were canceled. All the hotels were booked...

Of all the chair issues, only the 2 I mentioned did not happen right after or shortly after flying, so it's the airline's fault. I don't know how they secure the chairs but it's rare they are not a little beat up after a trip, so the banging probably has something to do with killing the controller. One time they told me that my chair was not properly secured and that it had become "wedged" into the corner of the compartment.......
Anyway, I've told the airlines that I need my spare chair and ask them to put it on the next flight out. Southwest has done that a few times, so has one of the other carriers but I forget which one, either American or United probably. They've always agreed to my request without any push back.
I got stuck in the Valentine's Day winter storm fiasco in NYC a couple years ago. I was scheduled to fly out on a Thursday, they canceled the flight and told me my next flight out was on Sunday........
