Ray,
I can really relate to that, I was in the Marines and we did similar stuff. A combination of caffeine and adrenalin could keep you going - for a while. I don't think of caffeine as giving you more energy, you are just borrowing the energy from the future.

Quad-shot cappuccinos, yeah, that's what I call caffeine! Exactly!! haha! None of this pussy-ass filter coffee that y'all love! We make coffee the italian way-with a nz twist! hehe! Four (freshly roasted) espresso shots, topped with the creamiest , silkiest steamed (fresh straight from the cows udder-well almost! haha!) milk to a perfect little cap (hence the name, Cap-puccino! haha!) and lightly sprinkled with chocolate or cinnamon! mmm... (and I don't even drink coffee!! haha!) My boss is entering me in a national comp soon...the winner goes to the netherlands to learn/watch with roasters and baristas over there...I sooooo want to win!! hehe! Now Bananas, you haven´t sent me one of those in a while? Please send one my way ASAP and I´ll vote for you in that competition . (I thought that cappuccinos were named after the Capuchin friars in Italy - but what do I know, I just drink the stuff ).

Right you are Mike but makes for a wonderful sleep even in the pooring rain in a fox hole that you have to wake up every 20 min to bail out to keep from being totaly under water ... lol

Wow! Bananas - good luck in the competition! If I'm ever in NZ, I know where I'm getting cappuccino.
I hear in the military, getting shot at helps keep you awake too, at least that's what my father and grandfather told me...

Wow! Bananas - good luck in the competition! If I'm ever in NZ, I know where I'm getting cappuccino. haha! Thanks Windy!! Im nervous cos I don't do that well under scrutiny...pressure I CAN do...when you have 25 coffees to make in a short space of time...heck yes!! But having someone/s standing there judging me AS I make the coffee...shudder... hehe! You'll do great! Conversely, if they're testing the drinks, you could slip a little something, something into it...and it'll be great anyway!

i've never liked coffee-except for stuff like iced mocha, i geuss.,,but i really dig tea; good, strong, iced tea w/fresh lemon, no sugar, and if possible-a sprig of fresh mint. mmm...
but back when i went to coffeehouses, i'd sometimes get an iced tea and a shot of espresso, drink the tea down a bit, then pour the shot in the tea(like a 'boilermaker')...it was really pretty good, and tasted not really like either tea or coffee. it packed a punch, too.
but my FAVE now is the s. american herb tea called yerba mate-brewed up in the proper way(tho' not as strong as in argentina)and sipped thru the metal straw. GREAT stuff.

Good luck from me as well Bananas ! What do you in fact do in a coffee comp? Is it all about quality or speed as well? How do they judge it?

Ray,
You are correct, except in monsoon season, where a foxhole would fill up too quickly. We just slept in the mud, it's so much less work, and although less traditional, was a simpler approach after a long day. Cold at times though.
Bananas, tell your boss I said to make sure you win. I am sure his response will be along the lines of "Who the hell is mike?", but you can always try. Perhaps if Ray, Bananas and the rest of the wonderful people here add their voices too, your boss will feel compelled.

Hmm...I think we can send some BOW Enforcers to...ahem...'ensure your chances' I'd think for the sake of safety, I would presume speed isn't as much an issue...it would kinda' suck to be like: "Here's your drink on record ti - AAHHHH---iiiime!"

Hey, a beautiful coffee with all the feathery milk design on top etc. ain't going to cut it if you have to wait an hour for it. I was thinking more along the lines of how many of these feathery suckers can you make in half an hour . Bananas, I'm sure the members of the BOW will volunteer to road test your coffee so that you can perfect your technique by the time you get to the comp!

Bananas; I think it would be a good idea to do a little research before you go to the competition. You can already make flipping good coffee, we all know that, especially I, but if you don´t know much about how these coffee competitions are being held, then try a bit of googling and youtubing; I´m sure there´s a lot of helpful information. A few years back, there was this Danish barista who won the world championship in coffee making. He was later interviewed, and he said, that the competition was both about quality, speed and how the coffee looked, when it was ready to be served. I was about to wish you good luck as well, when it suddenly dawned on me, "Bananas doesn´t need good luck - some great cappuccinos and her charm - that should do it" .

Exactly! But Im a perfectionist! If they're gonna pay like $4 for a coffee then they're gonna get the best damn coffee I can make...but I am also flippen fast...(yes, I am tooting my own horn! hehe! ) No seriously, today I made like 30 coffees in the space of 10 mins...I was wasted afterwards, but I like the challenge! The adrenlin flows...endorphins...yeah baBY!! haha! Well if y'all didn't live so flippen far away you could totally test my skills! Prob being you would be wired for the next few hours...then need some more... I liken myself to a drug pusher... jokes! ;D 4 bucks for a cup of coffee - what are you putting in them - a plane ticket to Brazil?!? Would have loved to see you do 30 coffees in 10 mins - talk about steamy ;D! Not to mention the adrenalin rush - can sorta see you bouncing off the walls there Bananas!
