New Question: Do you have 'Christmas soda' (translated directly from Norwegian 'julebrus') in your country? Like a soda that only is in the stores every christmas and is red... Like this:

We have Advent calenders here in Germany too, usually filled with chocolate. A lot of people I know have them actually, not just kids. We also have something called a "Weihnachtsmarkt", or Christmas market. The name says it all. You can buy/view nutcrackers, cookies, chocolate- anything related to Christmas. My favorite are the "Räuchermännchen" booths... can't think of what they're called in English. (I should know ) But they're the little wooden guys that "blow" scented smoke. pic!We don't have Christmas soda, but we have something called "Glühwein" that people drink during Christmas time, it's like spiced wine served hot. No red or blue nisses, and we don't put out cookies for Santa. We open our presents on Christmas Eve, something my family also did in America. ;D By the way, I should clarify... this is my first year actually living in Germany. My parents are Germans that immigrated to the US- I grew up there.

Its interesting to learn of all of these Christmas traditions from around the world. My family are of European heritage and we also used to celebrate on the 24th. We didn't hang stockings though, the tradition from my family's country of origin was to put your shoes out for Santa to fill. Can you imagine going around filling kids' smelly shoes ? Santa would need more than a biscuit or two to survive the night. Its generally not tradition in Australia to have advent calendars although the chocolate kind are commercially available and families do buy them. Also, every year we have lots of big outdoor Christmas carol events - the biggest one in Melbourne - due to the warm weather.

Advent calenders are popular here but only when they have chocolate in them. I've never seen Christmas soda before,if it hasn't got alocohol in it then its not going to sell as much as most drinks over Christmas.

I have an advent calendar in the house for my daughter. She opens one window a day and gets a chocolate shaped like something 'Christmasy'.

I haven't seen an advent calendar in a long time, but I'm not really looking for them, either. I guess they aren't popular around here.

Haha, well they do already make candy sticks that kind of look like canes but I'm not sure if people would get that christmasy feeling from eating chocolate wheelchairs ;D
