I'm glad Paradox answered that one ,because I had no idea why we do that one. A creepy tradition that I have heard in recent years is you must not wash any clothes on New Years Day or you will wash a loved one away.In other words someone you know will die during the year if you do.I think there's something in this. Oh fudge! I washed and washed and washed.

I actually had a proper First Footer this year. Not long after midnight, a neighbour and his friend came downstairs with a gift of a bottle of wine (not the traditional whisky but much appreciated!). We let his friend in first cos he's the tall dark haired one! Of course, here in Scotland, New Year's Eve is called Hogmanay. I usually spend the day getting the flat really properly tidied (that one's been instilled in me since I can remember), have friends arrive around 9 or 10 pm, a whisky toast at the bells, attempt to play Auld Lang Syne on my bagpipes (yes, really. I am a living stereotype!), followed by getting all the pre-made snacks out (must include shortbread), eating and drinking with friends til daft o clock in the morning, and trying to get over the hangover in time for the steak pie dinner on Ne'er Day afternoon! Is the steak pie just a Scottish thing? You tell me! I don't know, cos I've never had New Year's dinner anywhere else! lol How cool that you play the bagpipes, Heather . I can tell you, that steak pie is not on the Danish New Year´s dinner tables. We often have cod or salmon instead - and drink bubbles, of course (well, those of us, who don´t pass out after one sip of alcohol, that is ;D).

It's a Scottish tradition called "First Footing" or in my case wheeling The reason for the first foot being dark haired dates waaaay back to when a blond visitor was most likley to be a marauding viking and NOT bring good luck! Paradox Hey, hey! This Viking has dark hair!

I think the hotel that I was staying at is going to be unhappy with the New Year's Surprises (of various natures) that ended up on the carpet... ...cleaning up...another tradition. Well - luckily the steam carpet cleaner is already invented - but who knows, the owner of the hotel may be cranky anyway .

<quote> Hey, hey! This Viking has dark hair! </quote> I didn't say it was a practical strategy A TV History show did a national genetic dna survey recently and a town near me PENRITH in northern england turned out to be the most genetically viking in england. Probably in a sneaky dark haired sort of way
