a gun is definitely not a panacea...as has been pointed out, things can go south very, very quickly. situational awareness, AND THE WILLINGNESS TO ACT ON IT is so important.
funny that even tho' australia is disarmed and not pro-gun, one of the best if not THE best submachine gun is an australian design and manufacture. the thing is incredibly tough and durable-would fire when totally muddy or even after being submerged in water. i forget what its called tho'.

I got stuck in a situation somewhat similar as that guy (a few pricks that were looking to rob my ex-girlfriend and I), and a gun wouldn't have been a deterrent, it would've just made a bigger mess (I was armed with a .50 calibre Smith & Wesson revolver at the time (legally))...it devolved into hand to hand combat so quickly that fooling around with a gun would've likely meant more harm to me or the person traveling with me. I ended up as the victor in that confrontation, though, not the attackers. So... you took down "a few" AB men... hand-to-hand... in your wheelchair? ... how? ...by suffering one of the nastiest ass beatings of my life, and luck by the grace of the magic fairy in the sky. There were three, I downed one with my car, one went after my girlfriend, which is probably the only thing that saved me from getting destroyed (at her expense), I managed to square one on one with the other, and for pound to pound pure muscle, I actually was superior to them, I overpowered him, and incapacitated him with a knife, and by the time we got to the remaining perpetrator, my ex-girlfriend's screams had alerted some kind help that we managed to overpower him. ...hence that said, that guy would've been shot dead no matter how situationally aware he was - the two perpetrators, could've easily flanked him, and he could've likely shot one of them, and hoped that would put him down, but he could be the Fastest Gun in the West, and Dirtbag #2 would've still been atop of him, and then the gun just becomes a liability. ...now I know certain folks around here may think I'm the stupid, young, leftist liberal...whatever, but I'm actually pro-gun rights...just maybe not as viciously as the NRA - hell, I'm not sure the citizenry arms up properly enough - a .38, .357, etc. isn't going to do much if we ever have to deal with a McHitler rolling into town...and who knows...at the rate we're going we're going to have the Beer Pong Party as a political group next year...

Everyone has made many good points for both having and carrying and for not having one at all. The reason I have chosen to carry is first I have a lot of training with firearms I was a soldier for 13 years. Also a police officer for four years. (All Pre SCI) so having gone through years of training on not only the how to use a fire arm but the ethics of "Shoot vs. Don't Shoot" I feel i am as qualified to have any type of arm that I would want to carry. However not the same can be said for all who wish to have a firearm. I have seen people that after having been trained to use a Firearm, did not need one for safety's sake. As a wheeler, i have only had one situation where i have had to make use of the Hand Gun I had with me. Even then, I did not even have to do more than take it out of its holster and let it be seen. I was packing up after a show. (I deal in Native American art and do a lot of traveling to art shows) two men in their mid to late 20's walked up and offered to help. I was polite and declined the help, as I was almost finished. When one of the guys replied, "We really need the money" and again i said i did not do well and could not afford that. The guy then picked up some things and headed for the truck. I called for him to put it down, which he did just dropping it. Breaking a few small things in the box. He then turned quickly to face me and said, "Just give me some money then." At that time, I had had enough i removed my Benelli Mod. B76 9mm Simi auto. (For you gun buffs that want to look up what I carry) From the holster and holding it in my right hand, pointing it at the ground cocked the hammer with my right thumb. Both guys left post very quickly without another word being said. Later I found out that two men had beat, robed and attempted to rape young woman that was on her way to the Porta-Johns after finishing packing. I know this is lenthy but I tend to ramble...

I don't have the hand function to carry but I do own several guns I use for hunting. When you're brought up around guns, they're no big deal. Just another tool.
The only situation I've ever been in as a wheeler that called for self defense was handled quite well by my 90 pound German Shepherd named Heidi. I think more people were intimidated by her than they would have been if I had a gun. Also a very effective home security system, especially with her 105 pound sibling as backup.

soooo......wind/squall, you 'downed' one guy w/your CAR. you were behind the wheel?...then you 'overpowered' another, and finally 'incapacitated' him w/your knife. how, exactly? AND you were carrying the HUMONGO, heavy as hell, 50 cal hand cannon, AND a knife. it all went down too quick to get the gun out, but NOT too quickly to, what, put your car in gear and run over a guy, then beat down another dude and...do SOMETHING to him w/your knife. that is QUITE the thrilling story there, wind/squall...

I don't need to carry a gun, personally, because I can fly and shoot laser beams from my eyes. Your new LOVE-GUN name reminds me of Everlast... and Gnarls Barkley.

Kind of like William Wallace?
"Kills men by the hundreds. And if HE were here, he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse."

Dude, I expect the sarcasm from E, not you... ...I wasn't 'carrying' a gun around like in freaking Dirty Harry - it was stored within the vehicle, and uselessly unloaded, anyway. The knife was not mine, it was the knife of the attacker. The car was already in gear...all I had to do was hit the gas...and after that point I was more or less pulled out of the vehicle by the other (whom I eventually incapacitated). Really, not too difficult to picture if you try.

e; i was thinking more of vintage KISS; 'LOVE GUN, LOOOOVE GUN!' The reference is at 1:38. The song has a line in it right in the beginning I never noticed until now, though -- rather appropriate: Bloods keep bloodin, crips keep crippinDon't we?

ok, so this was a carjacking then, wind/squall? one guy gets in front of the car, you run him over-ba/BUMP-then get pulled from the rolling vehicle by another guy, while another baddie goes after your g/f...did he pull her from the car too? or was she out already maybe?
meanwhile the vehicle continues on its merry way, unpiloted. or maybe not i geuss if idle speed was zero. but really, what happened to this guy? i can only assume he was hurt so badly he was out of action. yet...the attack continues;
you're on the ground w/youir guy, fighting him and getting 'one of the nastiest beatings of your life' as you put it. he's got a knife, but he doesnt use it on you-instead, you disarm HIM after vanquishing him...and SOMEHOW(still unclear) use the knife to Incapacitate him. i mean, w/out simply stabbing him to deeath. that's the only way i can see how a blade could incapacitate; permanently.
so then, your g/f's screams have brought others on scene and they(along w/you too? but youre wheel-less on the ground) vanquish the other baddie.
then i geuss the cops mustve come-and the EMS i assume-the one dude has been run over or whatever. you said you were badly beaten. they would have wanted you to go to the ER...
but this would have been big news too; disabled man vanquishes 3 attackers in carjacking! tv, newspaper, the works...also, wouldnt the perps have been charged w/armed robbery, attempted murder, battery...? a big, big deal.
yes windsquall...i gotta say; i'm pretty suspicious of this tale of yours.

My pet tortoise was once attacked by a gang of snails. I took him to the local police station to give his statement but when he was asked to describe his attackers he said - "I can't, it all happened too quickly."

I doubt I could safely operate a hand gun, but I'd be willing to try with those dirtbags that jumped that guy.
It's a pretty effed-up world where some punks take on easy targets. That's why I refused to put one of those "A gimp lives here, please enter and rob me" gaudy wooden ramps on my house. I built a sloping cement walkway instead. It cost a lot more, but it's aesthetically pleasing and it's safer. I doubt that my dog would let anyone in (or out, lol) but why chance it?
