Hi, everybody! You know that I am a brazilian guy. So, I have some doubts about abbreviations, 'cause in portuguese it's different. For example CP is known as PC (Paralisia Cerebral), SCI is known as LM (Lesão Medular), PWD is known as PcD (Pessoa com Deficiência). I have found in this forum some abbreviations which meaning I don't know like AB people. Somebody could help me with a small glossary of these terms? Thanks!

Yes, agreed! When I first joined I had to figure all the abbreviations out too, and English is my mother tongue, lol!!
Good idea to have a list of abbreviations! Who's up for it?

AB people stands for Able Bodied people, and PWD stands for Person With Disability (if I am correct).

Let me think of a few....
CP - Cerebral Palsy SCI - spinal cord injury para - paraplegic quad - quadraplegic PWD - person with disability AB - able-bodied (person) SMA - spinal muscular atrophy MD - muscular dystrophy (BMD - Becker's muscular dystrophy) (DMD - Duchenne's muscular dystrophy) SB - spina bifida AFO/KAFO - braces (ankle or full leg) MS - multiple sclerosis ALS - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig's disease TBI - traumatic brain injury BIID - Body Integrity Identity Disorder HOH - Hard of hearing GP - general practitioner (doctor) PT - physical therapy (physiotherapy) OT - occupational therapy rehab - rehabilitiation
Some other abbreviations (not nec. dealing with disability):
IMO - in my opinion TTFN - ta ta for now (bye) TTYL - talk to you later
... Uh that's all I can think of immediately off the top of my head. I know there are a bunch relating to amputees but I'm not an amputee dev so I don't know those off hand.
Hope that helps.

I am on another forum that has a ton of abbreviations and they have a sticky at the top of one of the boards with a list of what the abbreviations mean. Maybe people could add to the list Deedee started and once it's somewhat complete in terms of things only used here ( i dont think we need to list out the common ones people use online everywhere) a moderator could make it a sticky. Thoughts moderators?

I'll see what I can do. I don't like boards that have a ton of stickies taking up the whole first page. But I could add it as a post to an existing sticky. I think there are more disability specific abbreviations though. Any more input?

I added a few more that occurred to me, but again, I'm not real familiar with the amputee abbreviations so if someone who is wants to add those, that'd probably be really helpful to a lot of people.

I know there are several, because I've seen them and honestly have not always known what they stood for.

amputee abbreviations: since there can be a multitude of abbreviations to describe someone you should probably just learn the letters and then you can place them together to match the person. These are the ones I know of anyways.
S=single D=double A=above B=below K=knee E=Elbow
If there are things that identify a hemipelvectomy I dont them.

There are a few more letters in terms of amputation I can think of
D=disarticulation (amputation through a joint) usually following a letter for the affected joint (not yet mentioned): A=ankle, H=hip, W=wrist, S=shoulder and also the term UE=Upper extremity as well as R/L for right and left so for example RHD - right hip disarticulation
