Just thought it would be fun to try remember what our first exposures were. Were you obsessed? I was. Obsessed? No way! Clearly breaking all the rules and hiding in the living room to watch the second part of an episode where a guy was paralyzed was completely normal. LOL. The best part is that this was during the holidays and it was me and all my cousins that were grounded... but I somehow managed to sneak out and not explain why, and I didn't get caught (although I did spend some time hiding behind a couch!). Yeah, I can relate. I recently found the (Spanish) soap that sort of was the first one for me, and found all the scenes I remembered. God, it was so bad! But back then I would eat it all up! And I still watched all the scenes with that guy on youtube.... so I'm not sure I've improved much. Lol.

I watched MASH religiously then Trapper John MD ( I've got a thing for doctor shows). When I was watching Little House on the Prairie and Mary's husband suffered a spinal cord injury, I was definitely glued to the TV. I don't remember hiding the shows I watched though, we had 2 TV sets

Let me clarify this... I am from "class 69"... first memory I have about being obsessed with a DA character was when I was 5 yo... it means... 40 years ago! First thing I remember... and it is not totally clear... is a japanese anime where the main character turned into a robot (obviously!) and he fought for Tokyo. He always won but, when he was human again, he was always really hurted and he always ended in a wc. I remember I waited for that ending! I have tons of Animé wherer, sooner or later, the character get to be paralized. "Mach GoGoGo", the episode when Speed Racer ended up blind and Racer X faked to be paralize in order to help him (I can't remember my age, I think I was like 6 yo) Then, when I was like 9 or 10, I saw my first HUGE dev movie: "Leave yesterday behind"... it was sealed in fire on my memory! jajaja And books... what can I said? My uncle used to buy books where there were some disabled character and, if he didn't lend them to me... I read them hidden on the garage! So yeah... I think I have like 40 years of TV-shows, animé and movies to track my devness! LOL

Damn!... I hated myself because that tv-show really disliked me!! jajajaja!

Oh man....Heidi, the movie! There was another dev who it stood out for too...but my terrible memory fails me! I was p*ssed she ended up walking at the end, but asthmatic and in a wheelchair?! Helllllo!! I think mm knew I was obsessed with it, but oh well. M*A*S*H has been a favourite as long as it's been played on repeat! Which is luckily everywhere in the world at all times. And another kid film, Mac and Me, I think. Terrible film!! We've talked about it on another thread, I think.
I didn't really share my obsession much (that I'm aware of)...although I used to make up a few dis type games with my friends. I think giving those thoughts and feelings a relatively articulate space and outlet is quite a huge process, now that I think about it. Definitely not an easily researcheable thing, even now with the internet.

My first disability movie that I watched over and over was Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The scene with the black night who becomes a quad amputee just fascinated me.

Oh gosh, that Beverly Hills 90210 episode, where Brandon´s paralysed male cousin hits on Kelly and they sleep on the sofa together - was my favourite back in the day! I felt that I had to "sneak watch" it and just longed for it to air again. So hot!
The episode was called "Leading from the Heart" (1991).
Would be funny to watch it again, if it can be found.

When I was watching Little House on the Prairie and Mary's husband suffered a spinal cord injury, I was definitely glued to the TV. Actually he had a stroke. I've been trying to find those two episodes for the movie project, but even though most of the episodes are available on the net, those two are missing. It's season 8 episodes 17-18: "Days of Sunshine, Days of Shadow".

What a memory! I knew there was something, but I'm 100% sure SOMEONE had a spinal cord injury. I can only imagine watching it now as an adult and how awful it will be

Anyone else here from UK? When I was very young there was this serial programme called Crossroads - on at 6pm 5 days/week. It had England's first 'disabled' character 'Sandy' Richardson- I used to watch it every day...obsessed with Sandy....he was supposed SCI from a car accident and (unusually for 1970s) portrayed as independent with normal job/hobbies etc...drawback is that he was not actually disabled. He actually had Hodgkins Lymphoma and died aged 31 in 1981 and was written out of the show. I stopped watching it.

I think I'm going to show how young I am. ...My first big exposure was ER, which I watched secretly for a few years. I think that was also about the same time Dark Angel came out. I was OBSESSED, and so mad when they canceled it after the second season. (Although my Joss Wheedon fangirl does love Firefly.) My second big obsessions as Saved!, especially after I heard an interview where they talked about Roland's sex life. And how Roland has a very active sex life, even if it isn't show at all in the movie. I've talked about this before, but I think my defining Dev moment was during Buffy. I wasn't allowed to watch the show when it originally aired, but a friend indoctrinated me in college. I'd lug over my bag of homework, she'd make drinks and we'd watch a few episodes to unwind. There's an episode in the second season, where (spoilers?) Buffy and Angel prove their love and Angelus turns bad. It had a young, shirtless David Boreano. It also has Spike in a wheelchair. Getting all hot and bothered was a light bulb moment for me.

I feel such a relief, the more I read about everyone, the more and more I'm coming to terms with my "devness," can't get used to that name though, lol. Here's mine. I would scour the weekly television guide every Sunday for years. If a character in a soap opera had a tragic accident and ended up paralyzed, (always temporary), I would skip school just to watch, VCRs were out but expensive. Every episode of The Love Boat, Fantasy Island,or any 80s or early 90s show that had a disabled character, I knew about it. The Brady Bunch tried a do-over in the early 90s and the character of Bobby ended up paralyzed because of a race car accident, I was glued to the tv and was so disappointed when they cancelled the series after six episodes. It's on youtube if anyone wants to see it. It's called Brady Bunch 500.
