So every couple of months I scour Amazon for new DC books. Has anybody else noticed that there has been an aboslute inflation of books with amputee heroes? It seems to have become 'the thing' to write about ex-soldiers after they 'donated one or more body parts' (yes I read that in one of the books I found). I haven't really looked into other disabilities much, as I have a hard time just staying ahead of the curve of the ones featuring amputees. And I am pretty much limiting myself to the male protagonist amputees already and ignore the ones with secondary characters. Has anyone noticed somthing similar for other disabilities? Despite the upsurge in the amount of books available, stories that are in the least bit devvy (at least for me) are still a rarity. But I have found a few. So here are some treasures I uncovered over the last couple of months: - Starr Tree Farm by Ellen Parker
- High Risk by Vivian Arend
- Operation Christmas by Barbara Weitz
Interestingly enough, all three books feature upper limb amputees, the first AE the last two BE. Why is that so, even though I find upper and lower limb amputations equally interesting?. I think most authors (those that aren't devs themselves at least) use the injury as a dramatic device and then tend to forget about it, literally. I cannot count the number of stories I have read about SBKs or even some SAKs who seem to have no disability whatsoever as soon as they wear pants. A World Apart by LJK Oliva is not a romance and not very devvy, but it's a good paranormal story which gives a realistic portrayal of an SAK main character. The following romances deserve a mention, even though I didn't find them particularly devvy: - Falling From The Sky by Sabrina Bowen (low level para, I enjoyed it so much I even read the other books in the series)
- Elias by Sabrina Page (SBK)
- Tortured By Her Touch by Dianne Drake (low level incomplete para, but thankfully no miracle cure ending)
This book: Game Changer by Melissa Cutler is worthy of a special mention. First of all it is much longer than your average romance, but carries the story very well. The hero is an SBK while the heroine deals with her own set of life altering decisions and events. It features an instance of unsatisfying sex between the h and the H. This is hands down the first romance I have ever encountered that has used this as a story telling device, but it works. Another book I want to mention for those who can read German: Piguine lieben nur einmal by Kyra Groh features a blind hero, again not very devvy, but a fabulous love story none the less. Ladies, enjoy and gents, if you haven't checked out Sean Michael's books featuring yummy gay amputees yet, you should head over to Amazon right now...

Hey Ryoo, how do you have time to read so much and search and all of that....wow... Thanks for giving some books to check out... Can you give a run down again on the amputation abbreviations? I don't know much about amputation since I am not an amputee devotee. I wonder if maybe some of those books are not devvy because the authors don't know they are devotees or feel there is something inside of them but don't know what it is...

DaniAK is above knee BK is below knee S is single and D is double. Best to understand than memorize. About the books I personally must have read no less than a 100 or 150 books of more with disabled guys in them. And 95% of them are not one bit devy. Not only that, many are very silly and more have the miraculous recovery at the end of the book!! U can pm me if u want and i can give u the lists.

To add to what Sweet Angel said: E stands for elbow (hence AE/BE for above/below elbow). I'm also pretty sure it is sometimes distinguished between L and R (left and right). These may not be relevant here, but I thought it'd be useful to know.

Thanks so much for telling us about the sabrina bowen book! I loved 'the year we fell down'. Do you know if any of the other books feature a PWD?

@braced4impact actually wrote a book featuring a disabled hero .. called A perfect flaw
Although not devy yet it is very good. There are hundreds of books but as I was saying not very devy. As someone reminded me of Archer's voice which was so good..featuring a mute hero.

Hey y'all. I just read, 'To each her own', by Molly mirren. Wondering if anyone else has read it? It's been a while since I've read anything 'devy', and it addresses quite a few issues that are relatable, at least to me. This was a great book and it really introduced me to the Dev culture and everything.

I just read a new romance novel featuring an amputee romantic lead as part of a reading challenge where one of the items is to read a book based only on its cover. Apparently, Amazon knows me very well because I sample and buy a lot of wounded hero romance novels, and it recommended a kindle book about a wounded soldier featuring double leg amputee (AK/BK) model/real-life veteran Christopher Van Etten as the cover model (I recognized him because has modeled for photographer Michael Stokes, who has gained a reputation for his extremely sexy photography of wounded veterans). So based on the book cover featuring Christopher Van Etten standing at a window wearing shorts that clearly show his leg prostheses, I chose the book "Always Faithful, Always Yours" by Lorraine Brill. It does have some cliched tropes in it, but it was different from other wounded hero romance novels I've read in the past, and overall, I liked it. Plus, the hot cover model meant to represent the wounded veteran lead male in the book is an actual wounded veteran, which I think lends it more authenticity.

I actually read this book not too long ago. I really liked the interplay between the best friends shifting into something more. Granted, that is one of my favorite romance tropes anyway, so it wasn't surprising that I liked it! It was definitely the cover that did it for me too. Nice to see real representation. There were a few others that I picked for that reason. I'll have to go back through my list.

I also liked Always Faithful, Always Yours, but there is a new book out that I absolutely love: A Lover's Lament. Even thought the h is able-bodied for most of the story. He is injured towards the end of the book (and subsequently has both legs amputated), but that only adds to the already fabulous story. The book is a collaboration by KL Grayson and BT Urruela who is another of Michael Stokes models and an amputee himself. He is on the cover of Stokes' new book 'Always Loyal' as well as on the cover of A Lover's Lament: I have come across a few more books worth mentioning: Primal Force by D.D. Ayres (SAK) The Norwich Wheelchair Murders by Bill Albert (low para due to ACMA acute motor axonal neuropathy - a rare form of Guillain-Barre) not a romance but a fabulous book nonetheless. 4th of July in Sweetwater County by Ciara Knight (DAK, uses a wheelchair for almost the entire book) If you would like to see more of the book I read and rate and sometimes review, feel free to check out my Goodreads book list here Dani - insomnia helps ;-) I often wake up around 4 am and since I won't fall asleep again for at least 2 hours I might as well read...
