The two sides of the abyss. Wow, I've never heard of Seraphim before but I love it. Definitely a super warm side of the abyss. Like a primordial tide pool deep underground with glow worms coating the ceilings and walls. At once deeply lonely and at the same time extremely comfortable and relaxing. Similar to this:

Also when perusing youtube I returned to a video I hadn't seen in a while: It turns out Radiohead slowed down a ton is incredibly relaxing, although this one is also quite ominous.

Really digging this cover, feel like she did it justice. Plus a cool video concept Same, very good cover of this song. I like Meg Myers, saw her a few years back when "Desire" and "Sorry" was big...

After a long time away from them I started listening to Radiohead. And these two albums are maybe their best (In Rainbows and Amnesiac), at least in my book. There is just so much raw emotion in these albums, they feel like old friends sharing their innermost secrets with me. If I could, I would love to sit down with Thom Yorke and have a long discussion, I feel like I know him so well already.
(The video below is for Amnesiac even though it's just one song from the album.)

There once were a couple of computer nerds who tried, and failed, to learn guitar. The first cheap synth had just been released by Korg, and so they bought one of those instead. Synth was still a couple of years away from being palatable to mainstream audiences, so these nerds didn't have much of a market for the sounds they were dicking around with. They released an album, nobody gave a shit, and then a few years (and three albums) later they spotted some girls dancing in a club and asked if the girls wanted to join the band. That's when The Human League dropped Don't You Want Me and exploded to the top of the charts. I hate that song. It's got that horrible cheesy male-female-call-and-response business that makes my eyes roll so far back, they're in danger of sticking. I hate that song so much that, when a buddy sent me a link to one of their songs off of that first album (the one nobody gave a shit about,) I didn't even want to click the link. With some goading, I gave it a shot, and ohhhh boy. It's this busy rush of mania, layers and layers of relentless energy. There's a palpable weirdness to it, too. You guys, it's so good, omg. They were experimenting, having fun and getting high on their fancy new toy. This album flopped, and then Gary Numan immediately came out and just wrecked everyone by rocketing into the stratosphere, and I guess these guys took it really hard. The resulting bitterness split part of the band up, and the guys that were left were too focused on commercial success to take big risks, which also explains incorporating a couple of hot club bunnies into their lineup. I watched an interview with them where they described their music as optimistic synthpop, and thinking back on it now, that was probably a deliberate counter to the dismal dystopia that was painted by Numan. At the time I took it to be a more general effort to separate themselves from the rest of the early scene, because it was pretty characterized by dismal and angry industrial sounds. But man, the salt at Numan was real. It's understandable, but still pretty funny. Anyway, that's enough rambling. Goodnight.

What a great review! Thanks for a wonderful read /w a soundtrack! myrrh " That's when The Human League dropped Don't You Want Me and exploded to the top of the charts. I hate that song. It's got that horrible cheesy male-female-call-and-response business that makes my eyes roll so far back, they're in danger of sticking." I really love the horrible cheesyness of it, with the rad as fuck futuristic space sounds, but holy shit! I've heard this from the radio here and then when growing up - and I can't say I've even paid attention to the cheesy male-female-call-and-response business, and it's indeed mightily cringy! But I celebrate such things, and jeesus fuck! The synth sounds are awesome as fuck on songs of this era, and the drop to minor key is the BOMB! It was always a cool one, and this kind of cheese just makes me smile like an idiot. It's great for getting shit done, too! And music videos of the era; it's somehow nice and cute that the people in the music videos are ( sometimes ) regular looking joes with human flaws - with sometimes bizarre, rad as fuck looks and styles! The Youtube commentary: "1981... yet still sounds so amazingly fresh and modern" "Catchier than STDs" "Talk about abusive and controlling. Damn, that guy needs therapy."

Agreed lars ! The beepboops coming out of that time was so fat and stronk. BBS, big beautiful synth, if you will. There's a reason Numan broke everything, I mean, those riffs have the energy of a rocket achieving escape velocity. Cars is probably the best example of this, but I like this video because at 0:52 there's a killer shot of Benedict Cumberbatch trying to look cool while holding down a button.

Yes, fat and Stronk beepboops! Speaking of Synth stuff I can’t not mention “Joy Division” and then “New Order” (which I personally don’t like a ton save for Blue Monday). I feel like they nailed the alternative synth pop shit.
