To put a black person, Asian person, Hispanic person, disabled, LGBTQ for the sake of doing so is pandering and solves nothing other than the company virtue signaling how great they are. I concur, but I'd like to know more about the context of the video spot and how they're portraying everybody. How many groups are being represented, what are the strata of the company and how are the represented groups distributed through them; what's the impact of a diverse organization beyond smiling faces? Are they highlighting equality of opportunity or equality of outcome?

My organization has a lot of this kind of thing, and I tick a few boxes for their campaigns, and I usually participate.
If my story, or my image, can help someone else toward their own goal, I'm all for it.
If you believe your organization would be a good place for other PWD to work, then helping create an awareness campaign to recruit more PWD (among others) is great.

Would you be doing it because you really feel that your participation will be a positive aspect ? Thats the main question you should ask yourself. If youre comfortable with the idea then go ahead, have your thoughts heard 😊

I would do it if I thought they were being sincere. If the company is very welcoming to those who are different and has been willing to accommodate you, I say go for it! It sounds like they have treated you well and genuinely want a diverse workforce, so I wouldnt have a problem being in the video.

A lot of good feedback. Thanks! After talking with my family and hearing your comments, I'm more inclined to do it. On top of not wanting to be a spectacle, the biggest reason I would turn it down is that there is no guarantee it won't be a sappy, corporate pat-on-the-back. Even with that risk, being able to contribute to this would be a way to show the company I appreciate their inclusive culture.

matisse from what I can tell, they will film two very short parts. In each one, I hold a posterboard with a message that I get to decide. I haven’t decided what to wear yet!

Thanks again for all the feedback while I was trying to make this decision. I thought I’d follow up.
As I mentioned, I decided to participate in the video, and they filmed my portion two weeks ago. It was an interesting experience, but the crew was top-notch.
I just got a first look at the video this morning. The crew had said that they were visiting a bunch of sites around the company to film with 25 people. So thankfully, my portions are only about 7 seconds out of a 3.5 minute video. It seems pretty well done! Being a video about inclusion and diversity, of course it’s a little cheesy. But overall i’m happy that I decided to do it.

I'm glad to hear that you did it, sungod - and that it didn't turn out to be schmaltzy, corporate crap I just saw your original post today and really wanted to respond because of one phrase you used: It's great that getting what you need to do your job at work has been a painless process - which is totally the way things should be everywhere for everyone. In my experience though I've found that accommodations don't actually just happen naturally - they're the hardwon result of regulations brought about by organizing, advocacy, and activism. When something's easy in regards to accessibility, 9 times out of 10 it's because some other crip(s) already came through and fought the fight for us before we even got there. I think it always helps to keep that legacy alive when we have the chance - as long as the opportunity doesn't reek of tokenistic bullcrap, of course Thanks for giving it a shot - lead on!
