Just saw a youtube vlog from Shane and Hannah (Squirmy and Grubs) about it. Apparently they were asked to take part but turned it down. They were very disappointed in the entire programme. I felt it was all about the drama, the host had no real interest in helping the couple but a lot of interest in conflict and his ratings. In fact, i think he could have caused a lot of mental health issues for the young man with quadriplegia, pretty much telling him he was a burden 🤨

I kinda have to agree with Dr. Phil. I don't like him at all, and what you guys are saying is true. He is all about the ratings and I have heard stories about him basically messing with emotionally fragile people to create drama.
However, the quad they had on was pathetic. He had almost zero self-worth, and was just generally a toxic person who was way too dependent on his girlfriend. I am pretty sure if he had come to PD, as a community we would have given him basically the same advice as Dr. Phil. At least I would have.
The news headlines are all on the 100 out of 100 comment. I know it is an exaggeration, but for this quad it may as well have been true, because his relationship was fucked. So I can forgive Dr. Phil for generalizing.

What about helping get treatment for his depression. What about encouraging him to go to college and work toward a career. What about helping him come up with a plan to get a caregiver who is not his girlfriend. Like I said, I didn't see the whole show, so maybe he did some of those things. But the guy definitely needs to stop hating himself.

This story has been everywhere, so I had to see what all the fuzz is about. I agree with Cory. This relationship was toxic. They both called each other names and made each other feel miserable. And not only that, but he has spit on her face or thrown food around. Or she sometimes, when she’s mad, just leaves the house leaving him back alone and not able to really do anything. They’re pretty much abusing each other. What I found odd is that Dr. Phil called the guy out for this kind of behavior, but not the girl.
Also, he did not literally say a 100 out of a 100 relationships that involve caregiving will fail. He rather said: “This won’t work, a hundred out of a hundred times it won’t work.” What I understood is that for this specific couple, if she keeps being his sole caregiver, there is no scenario where this relationship will work. Maybe that’s because I’m not a native speaker, though.
Dr. Phil had a few starting points. He introduced the couple to another quad/ab couple where he’s a motivational speaker and to a life coach for the guy. They said that he should start making a plan what he wants to do with his life, like going back to school, PT, etc. He never really addressed seeing a therapist for neither of them, which I found odd (she’s also dealing with anxiety). Also, everything revolved around the guy, as if he was the only that’s acting messed up, but the girl was obviously too. Plus, Dr. Phil focused too much on the caregiver vs. girlfriend aspect, when there were clearly so many other things for these two to deal with, like self-worth issues for both of them or for the guy accepting his disability.

I did a little bit of fact checking, and Phil hasn't had a license to practice psychology since 2006. If he had some integrity as a psychologist, I doubt he'd be running a television show, benefitting from other people, with problems, being the laughing stock for a world-wide audience. If anything, I'd wager there are plenty of people who are in dire need of a psychologist after being on his show. Kind of sad. :\
I'm on Tykes with this one. Not literally.
