So, I'm watching the presentation of the new Apple products now. They came up with their own movie store called Apple TV Plus including Apple-owned TV shows. There will be a show called "SEE", it takes place far in the future, however it looks more like a medieval, viking copy. All people in that future are blind. Apparently mankind had lost eyesight over the years. Well and in the trailer, some babies were born who apparently have eyesight. I was not too impressed, however blindness devs might like this a lot. The whole TV thing including this and further shows is starting November 1st.
Anyone else saw it?

Oh my god, this looks like artfully directed garbage. Here is the trailer:
I posted about this here a few months ago when it was first announced, and the trailer has done nothing to allay my fears that this will be a whole bunch of ableist bullshit. Basically it's Mad Max but in the forest rather than the desert, also everyone is blind. There are so many plot holes already--how do they know that the infants can see? Why are their costumes so visual? What's up with that war paint? Who built that bridge? How did those kids teach themselves to read? Also it's pretty clear that vision is meant as a (crushingly heavy) metaphor for intelligence and wisdom, which casts the blind people as ignorant and narrow-minded. So the two sighted kids become the saviors of humanity, and how much do you want to bet that Jason Momoa regains his sight magically by the second or third episode? As if that's not bad enough, the comments I've seen about the trailer on other sites are drawing out the ableism of the viewers--most people are saying that blind people could never be self-sufficient, everyone would just die. Several people even said "A blind person could not ride a horse" WTF! And of course, in the trifecta of ableist bullshit, none of the actors are actually visually impaired. Apparently there were a few blind people who consulted on the production but god forbid any of them get put in front of a camera.
AND YET, angry rant aside, I will almost certainly fork over the $5/month to watch it. Jason Momoa in opaque contacts, and everyone else too, I am helpless to resist. It's already been proved over and over that Devo Girl will watch or read any old trash as long as there is a blind character. My husband saw an article about the new trailer and before I even said anything he was like "You want to watch this don't you." Ugh! Ok fine Tim Apple, I mean Tim Cook, take my fucking money. I will watch it and die of shame, then resurrect to post angrily and at great length about it here.

devogirl thanks for your very detailed point of view about this show. I had similar thoughts when I first saw the trailer but I would not have been able to put it into words as what you described. and how much do you want to bet that Jason Momoa regains his sight magically by the second or third episode?
I'm sure you're right. Probably the guys who write the shows don't know yet LOL but, yeah they'll give him sight. And of course, the character will be totally cool with it. Like, "it's a miracle, I can see now - OK, let's go on with life..." not weird or anything :-) BTW: sorry, I didn't recall you posting about this show somewhere else earlier. Otherwise I would have posted there. BTW 2: I'm still not over it, that Apple now decided to have their own movie streaming thing. As if Netflix and Amazon Prime and all the other stuff around was not enough for humanity to handle. Even though I might also be interested to take a peek into that SEE show, I'm not convinced enough to pay for just another subscription... I hate that everything now turns into subscription places. Not only movies and music BUT computer software.... Fine, if you want Photoshop, pay 12 € a month, fine, if you want MS office, pay for a subscription and so on. Sorry, totally off topic, but I want to go back to the times where you bought something and it was totally yours. If one day we decide, we don't want to pay for netflix, amazon and music anymore, we won't own anything. Barely music left on the devices, let alone any movies....

Oh my god, this looks like artfully directed garbage. I know that I don't want to pay for a streaming-service, but still, I like the idea of that series a bit better than daredevil (and I think the pictures are really cool) I'm curious: How is it? ;-)

I watched the first four episodes, it is very slow :-D Ok - sounds perfect for me. I like slow developing stories, slow cuts etc. Nothing worse than pictures that are so fast that I hardly understand what I see. ;-) Thanks!

Ah dang, I had been meaning to look into this show in hopes that it would at least be good even if it wasn't all that devvy.

It's not necessarily a good show, but it looks beautiful and the concept is so intriguing that I kept watching all season. I'd recommend it just based on how visually impressive the world they've created is. I just read that it cost around $120 million to produce. Hopefully they didn't pay too much for Jason Momoa though. Great guy, but his acting is painful to endure.

seriously? oh my... I won't watch it. I am still in the mode of refusing to do all this subscription stuff that is being offered. I can live without apple music, although I am sometimes tempted to subscribe. The only thing I got is Amazon Prime for movies, because that's still at a really affordable price.

Can I just point out the irony of a beautifully created visual show about blind people? :-) Also ...I know of relatively few pieces of entertainment, movies, books or otherwise where the blindness doesn't make me cringe in some way. I think the closest I've come to finding something i am relatively OK with is the WWW series by Robert Sawyer. There's definitely still cringeworthy material in those, but I can see he consulted with blind people while making the books. I can also see blindness scares the shit out of him, though :-) Then there's a documentary-like thing on blindness and love that I myself took part in, because ...well ...actual real blind people. Kudos for anyone who identifies me by that statement To get back on topic though, I remember a lot of blind people being worried about this one when it was first announced and I believe noise was made about the no blind actors thing, but I honestly don't recall now ...

With all the different streaming subscriptions, it's basically the same concept (and price) as cable :/

I haven’t read the WWW series but the reviews on Goodreads by blind people are scathing. It’s more than a few passages that are cringeworthy, the whole thing looks like a pile of ableist crapola. You’re not obliged to read any books about blind characters at all, but seriously there are some good ones out there if you are interested. A few, not that many. So dude you keep hinting about that documentary—are you going to share the title or not? It’s ok if you don’t want to for privacy reasons but stop teasing us
