I've seen quite a lot of movies in the past month. My favorite of the bunch was "Man Bites Dog," a Belgian film about a serial killer. It's filmed like a documentary, but it's as much about the film crew as the serial killer as overtime the film crew becomes more and more complicit in the murders. It's quite funny but also quite disturbing. You feel kind of complicit in the murders, It makes you question whether your neighbor could be a murderer or whether or not you could become a murderer. The boundary between good and evil seems to disappear during the course of the movie. If you want something grim and fascinating, I would definitely recommend this movie.

Man Bites Dog was a great movie. I’ll never think of the word “ballast” the same again.

Yeah seriously, ever since Man Bites Dog when I watch a crime movie and someone just puts some rocks in a body bag or ties a couple cinder blocks.... I’m like dude just fucked up. At least poke some more holes in em so gases can escape!! I bought a year subscription to Shudder and while there are some criticisms, it’s pretty fun and cheap streaming service. They don’t have many things as twisted as Serbian Film or Martyrs, but some of the thrillers are pretty good. They also have Cannibal Holocaust on there which I thought was a really great OG found footage flick.

"That moment of watching people be and feel really, genuinely seen is the magic of the show," DelGaudio tells GQ. "It's all leading up to that single moment of another person looking at another person and just going, 'I see you, man. I see you standing there. I know who you are. I totally get you. In this moment, I see all of you.' And that is like a f*cking gift that we struggle to receive every single day. And because we're all struggling to receive it, we forget to give it."

Just watched a beautiful French movie called Portrait of a Lady on Fire. It seems somewhat inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice, so it's a love story. So sad and pretty, I was crying by the end.
It's about a brief and intense relationship between two women in Elizabethan/Victorian France. Also it was written and directed by a woman which made me happy, seeing as so many movies about women end up being written and directed by men.

The latest film I saw was Kate featuring Woody Harrelson on Netflix. It's set in Japan and has to do with a gang war between various factions of the Japanese underworld.

While these are not technically movies, I finished watching the first season of Squid Game, and I'm on the third season of You both on Netflix. Both shows are gory af, so you better have a strong stomach to deal with them lol, unless you're into that shit of course.

Love to see such an anti-capitalist piece of media become so popular. Also love to see South Korean media become this popular. A lot of my favorite films are Korean. Hopefully it opens people up to consuming more Korean film and TV. Also hilarious to see articles coming out claiming Squid Game is actually about communism. It isn't.

I watched DUNC. I hated the trailers and have a huge soft spot for David Lynch's Dune (I don't care that everyone else thinks it sucks I love it shut up) so I expected to not like it very much, but honestly DUNC was great. I don't know how the fuck Villeneuve makes these extremely long movies that don't feel anywhere near as long as they actually are. It was slow as molasses but still somehow felt like it was a ~100 minute film. I felt the same way about Blade Runner 2049. 2049 was almost 3 fuckin hours long, but it doesn't feel that long despite how slow the pacing is. It's wild, I don't understand how he does it.
The design aesthetic was DUNC's strongest feature imo. This seems like a weird thing to point out, but I think it might be the most beautifully and creatively lit films I've ever seen. The lights in the hunter-seeker scene were so fuckin cool. Everything about the look was just great. Shai Hulud looked fuckin amazing.
The biggest complaint I have about DUNC is that they don't start filming DUNC Part 2 until next year, so we're not gonna see it until at least 2023, and it felt like kind of a weird place to end the movie. I don't like the idea of one giant 5 hour film being broken up into two parts with this much time passing between the parts. They definitely should have been filming both parts simultaneously, or have taken time off after completing filming for DUNC Part 1 and began filming DUNC Part 2 before 1 even released. IDK if anybody is really gonna care about DUNC Part 2 in 2023. Earth prolly gonna be lookin more like Arrakis by then.

I just watched Apostle on Netflix. The best way to describe it is as a pagan body horror film a la Wicker Man with Christianity thrown in there.
It was extremely gory... and I loved it.

I just watched Pig for free at an outdoor theater. Part of it is about the Portland restaurant scene, and I happen to be visiting Portland for a long weekend in a couple of weeks. I'm curious if anyone from Portland has seen it and what you think about its representation of the city. I don't have any insight into the Portland connection, but I saw and loved the movie. Did you like it?

Yeah, I liked it. I'm a little bit of a foodie, so it was interesting to see a behind the scenes look at that scene, although I have no idea how realistic the portrayal is. Either way, it has good messaging about finding meaning in life and questioning the value of superficial metrics of success. I thought it was going to be about a pig, but it was much more about human connection and emotion. It did initially look like it was just about Cage going all "John Wick" to get his kidnapped pig back. Given Cage's recent track record of straight-to-Netflix stinkers, it made sense to assume the worst. It was such a pleasant surprise to see him flex his acting muscles again because he's still GREAT with the right material. I'm almost certain that Pig was that directors first film, which makes it even more impressive.
