When I started writing fiction (around 10 or 11) I soon introduced PWDs or at least vaguely devvy elements in pretty much everything I wrote. I was in denial for a very long time about it being a thing but in hindsight it was pretty clear. I try to keep the devvy side limited in bigger projects (they say “kill your darlings”, don’t they?) so there tends to be a disabled character but the disability is not the centre of the plot. I also wrote a bunch of short stories and I would say only a few contain devvy material, with one being very openly about a devotee woman and a PWD coming to terms with her attraction (I used it as a coming out story with some friends). I’m not particularly interested in romance as a genre, though I don’t dislike a little bit of it in a story that has a different tone. Lately I’ve written a fair bit of a urban fantasy novel with a blind deuteragonist, but the blindness comes up only from time to time without being the focus of the main plot. I’m also considering introducing a dev in a positive light (the blind character’s ex gf) instead of the usual “omg a fetishist run away” bs. But it would be only a small scene in a completely dev unrelated narrative. That of course if I manage to get over writer’s block...

Questions: Is there anyone here among us who is not writing romance? (Just trying to understand if you are writing dev books that are not romances)

Good question! My first novel is definitely romance, but the second one which I’m in the final stages of editing now is historical fiction. It’s still basically a love story but doesn’t follow the conventions of the romance genre. Actually I wrote it because I was so fed up with all the cliches of the blind guy hero and historical romance. I have already started another historical novel with a blind guy character in a m-m relationship but I’m trying to break the BL/yaoi genre. And I’m still working on Devo Diary which is my autobiography, definitely not romance! More of a cautionary tale, haha.
I guess it depends on what you mean by romance. All my writing centers romantic relationships but the romance genre is more specific than that. In my writing I’m mostly interested in relationships so that’s what I focus on. But I’m happy to read fiction with PWD characters that is in other genres as well. Some books I’ve read lately were just that: Neve & Egan Case Files (detective fiction featuring a blind guy) and The Sallee Rovers (gay pirates with a blind guy minor character).
Lamara, I really want to read what you’re writing! Have you been posting it anywhere, or have plans to publish? Please share it!

I don't like to read romance at all. I read murder mystery, comedy, and non fiction. But in my writing there is always that "boy meets girl" or "girl meets boy" thing. I have written only sex and fetish related stuff.
I actually enjoyed very much reading the Evan Delaney series where the main character is a female solving murder cases with her sidekick paraplegic boyfriend. Its not devvy but I sometimes felt it simmer through a tiny bit and then I longed to read more about him, but he is not the main character. I imagined him very hot though.

I also write non-dev thrillers but truth be told, some of them are kind of devvy.
I like the paraplegic boyfriend in the Evan Delaney books but I don’t really like the mysteries themselves as much... I’m not really a detective mystery sort of gal.

I guess I’m repeating myself but I never wrote romance as a genre but only inserted from time to time a romantic storyline in stories with a different tone. It might be because I dislike cheesy romance in all shapes and forms and also because as a (maybe? Probably? I’m still figuring it out) asexual I feel really awkward writing about love and sex.

Thanks for your answers ladies. I see now why PWDs or anything dev related has never been a writing interest of mine...

Questions: Is there anyone here among us who is not writing romance? (Just trying to understand if you are writing dev books that are not romances) What kind of story line are you imagining if it is a dev book without romance? Like only sex related dev stuff? I am curious. I guess what devogirl said above...what do you consider romance? Where is a dev/PWD not a romance but something else and what is it then? I have written stories that are romance because it involves two people with feelings for each other, sometimes not obvious, sometimes obvious. I don't like conventional romance so I hope my romance is not conventional either. One of my favorite books, probably my favorite really is "Equal Opportunities", a non conventional dev romance.

Oh no, I didn't have anything in mind. It seems to me from all our discussions here that dev-writers are exploring themes of devness in their own writing. So I was keen to know about it.
I write literary fiction and they have no element of 'romance' as a genre or as a framework, so it makes sense that I have never done it. I just wanted to hear other people's opinions or if there were writers here who didn't explore devness in their writing.

Questions: (Just trying to understand if you are writing dev books that are not romances) I guess I am trying to understand what you meant with that and how a "dev book" could possobly be non romance? Maybe you meant if there are devs who are writing other books besides romance? What does your writing involve, what kind of stories?

I actually had to look up literary fiction, because I didn't know what that meant. I am not a professional writer but always interested to learn about writing. Are you stories posted somewhere rebeca? I am curious

Dani to be fair I read books with PWDs characters that had no romance in them whatsoever and still found them devvy just by the description of the PWDs and their day to day life. For example Anatomy of a Soldier, no romantic storyline but detailed description of rehab of an amputee. But if you’re asking specifically about dev writers I guess I can’t help you because I only have experience with my own work. That also makes me think that for some reason I never read other dev’s fiction and I don’t know why; I guess I’m afraid it will be “too much” or hit too close to home, or simply I assume they will all be romance/erotic fiction and it’s not my thing. But now I feel like I’m missing out so if anyone can point me to dev fiction that is not overtly romance that’d be great!

Lamara, I really want to read what you’re writing! Have you been posting it anywhere, or have plans to publish? Please share it! Unfortunately I don’t think I can ever put my work online, the idea itself gives me a lot of anxiety. I know I should seek constructive criticism but for now I only gave my work to 3 people who are very close to me (and the fact that two of them have been “too busy to read it” actually really hurt me). Though I love writing I tend to assume I suck at it and I fear that if I put it out there my assumption will be confirmed. Yup, welcome to the mind of an anxious/depressed individual...
