Welcome (back)! Is it too much if I ask why you deleted your account before? Please don't get me wrong, I am not judging, or something, I was absent for year and half myself, but I never deleted it, just in case ... ☺️ As we say in my country "it doesn't ask for bread or water". ☺️ So, I am generally curious what can be the motive for people deleting. Btw, I think it's great lot of young people are (re)joining lately, maybe you "kids" will figure things out quicker than we! LOL 😂 I don't really know what I was thinking back then. Maybe I wanted a sense of finality in my decision or something. But yeah, it's probably a good idea to leave your options open rather than tie up loose ends for good. What do you think has caused the influx of younger members?

Welcome from Canada What is your favourite art gallery that you've visited? Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain. It has works by Hieronymus Bosch and Francisco Goya. I find Goya's story interesting, especially how the subject of his paintings became much darker after he became deaf. He went from painting innocent portraits of royalty to fantastical creatures and depictions of insanity.

It is good question. The trivial reason would be that they are lurking around PD, seeing the demographics lately and then deciding they should join, too.
But I think it is not the only reason. Although we are not talking about huge amount of time (for example I am just 15 years older than you), with information revolution, especially wide use of social media, general perception of various things is changing very fast and many "taboos" are falling down. People are simply more opened to varieties. I believe you (should) feel "less disabled" than someone in your condition 30 years ago, as I think dev (should) feel much "less lone weirdo" than 30 years ago.
But, what do YOU think? You should know your generation better than I do.

But, what do YOU think? You should know your generation better than I do. The age demographics of PD weren't really a consideration for me. I simply assumed its members were of a variety of ages. I think social media and the ubiquitous nature of the internet these days makes it easier to find places like this and maybe certain taboos are falling away. I'm not sure though.

I think younger people just have a lot of access to all kinds of information and find their way here quicker. Older people either don't use electronics or social media as much or are already in their relationships/marriages and don't have a reason to hang out here. They also may be scared "to open that can of worms" because it may throw everything they have known so far out of balance. They also may simply not care. I really wish people closer to my age would find their way here.

Do you think the increase in younger members is simply down to the utility and convenience of the internet, as opposed to shifting attitudes towards devs and disabled people? Or a combination of the two? I suppose most of the general public aren't aware that devs exist.

I think it is due to the Internet and the younger generation having access to so much information. Like for let's say a young dev who doesn't know she is a dev but interestingly finds herself always checking out a guy in a wheelchair, she may then one day just google/type/social media or any of those a few words pertaining to being attracted to disabled guys in wheelchairs and I am sure she will eventually read/hear somewhere the word "dev" and she may keep digging and there you go... We did not have one bit of information like this when I was a teenager and into my twenties hence no idea what was sleeping inside of me... It is a combination of this age of information overflow and probably people becoming more open minded on top if because they're so much more exposed to things/people that are different.

We did not have one bit of information like this when I was a teenager and into my twenties hence no idea what was sleeping inside of me... I Googled it about 20 years ago. Was it Google, or was it another search engine?! I don't remember that, but I remember too well what I read about "devotee"! It made me feel much worse and creepier about it than I already felt. It was the last thing on my mind to ever confess it to anyone, especially not to wheeler I was interested in!
So my guess would be it is more, wider information and more exposure to diversities in general. 20 years ago we couldn't imagine mixed race member of UK royal family, we could not imagine French president having 25 year older wife, we could not imagine person with both beard and boobs even appearing, yet winning the Eurovison song contest...

missparkleI didn't even have a computer before 1996 so I'm not sure how you "googled" dev or even any other search engine (was there even something like a search engine). How did you find even the word "devotee"? I barely found the word ten years ago and that was because of a movie. If I would have never seen that movie in the rental store, I would probably not be here. And crazy enough now we don't even have movie rental places anymore, they all closed down. I barely found my way into the realms of PD. Maybe I would have found it some other way but I really don't know. The computer we had like in 1996 was huge and bulky and weird (the boxes had a cow design) and I actually don't even know what we used it for. I have like no memory about it and the computer itself probably didn't have good memory either . I think I found out that Wal Mart had a "website" and I was able to look at their products "online" and I think it was possible to order something.
