...that moment when you are in a hotel lobby and a group of about eighty wheelchair drivers in good shape, with different disabilities (estimated age 20-50 ) are entering the room.... This happend to me at the end of November last year when I spend a few days in a German spa hotel. The group was there because of a wheelchair rugby tournament which took place in the hotels sports hall at that weekend. I think this was one of the deviest moments in my life so far and I wish I could have swapped it with some of you. Next time I will go to a "Dev - spa " of course...

One of you PD men attended the same HIGH SCHOOL as me! Even more randomly, our attendance overlapped by two years 🤯

While going through some childhood stuff that was still at my parents' house, I discovered a journal I wrote when I met the very first PWD in real life through a mutual friend and tried to get close to him (which ultimately failed). I was about 19 at the time and the pages are full of baby dev thoughts and a lot of feelings of being overwhelmed. So strange to read this after so many years...

This moment when in the for years well-established and mostly constanct folder structure of your company appears a new folder with the name "Dev". I was shocked for half a second until I connected the dots that they are creating a space to work for external developers.

That awkward moment in public when someone asks how your bf got hurt while he went into another room and you give a curt no emotion answer but come to find out the guy asking has a son with the same disability. Oops! He should have started the convo with that and not a personal question!

Julia Everyone always talks about these moments when people ask you strange questions while your partner can't hear it. It never happened to me. It comes to the point where I am almost looking forward to a situation like this :P.

Dinner with my partner. Around 5 or 6 yr old girl approaches. I ask her: "what's your name?" She: "what's YOUR name?" Me: "ichbin, and you?". She tells me her name and then she asks: "what's his name?" while pointing out to my partner. Him: looking at her, smiling. Me: "why don't you ask him?" She, looking at him: "what's your name?" Then: "why do you sit in a wheelchair?" He tells her his story. She "aha, ok." Then, a few minutes later: "can you tell me again about your accident? Tell me more about it!"
Is this how Devs are born? 😉

Another coming-out-story. This time to a long-term friend, actually the only one of my closer friends who hadn't known yet. I've been dropping some hints, but never really told him until yesterday. When I finally did, he laughed and seemed relieved, because he obviously expected something "worse". His first reaction was that this must be great for the PWDs. And his second reaction was re-evaluating the stories I told him about the people in my life, past and present ("You told me you didn't like xy, maybe that was because of the disability?"). This is where it got a bit annoying, but I tried to stop him right there and explained that you can't attribute everything to having a disability.

so in high school — when i was still able bodied — i was hanging out with this girl backstage at our spring choir concert. we were sorta flirting and she was literally like ‘you’re not hot now, but you will be’. i was like ‘uhh thanks i think?’ lol and assumed she meant as i got older but then that summer i acquired my disability. like how’d she know ?!

wow it will really happen in a few moments when I start to click on the "reply" button. The guy who always has been a search and peck typist is becoming a "Junior Member"now. I think this is a great oportunity to thank you, for remarkable threads, interesting debates, and funny chats on the public board.
A special tribute I want to adress to all people here who accompanied me and my life a little bit deeper. Thank you for any good vibes we can create (or had created) together for every deeper interest you have/had shown to me and "my world" and thanks for every closer look you were able to give me inside yours.
I´m looking forward to stay an active member of this community to build rapport with old and new friends, and I will always do my very best to be a respectful, polite, and trustworthy voice of this board.

Signed up as a volunteer for an adaptive sporting event next week. My motives were definitely 90% desire to see hot PWDs in swim suits, 10% altruism. Looking forward to it but I'm also kind of feeling like a creeper. Not to break up the Twitter style flow of things here, but I've been curious about adaptive sports, especially aquatic ones. I haven't been in a body of water since diving into a pool and breaking my neck in 1987. As a c5, what would I be able to do in and adaptive Aquatics type program?

Looking for the day when I intuitively realize that the first page of posts are the oldest posts and the newest ones are at the end.

Even just floating around (using pool noodles, collars, etc.) can be freeing and help loosen up tight areas/build strength with gentle resistance. People can help you figure out the best means of assistance, and you may even be able to do some swimming using pullbuoys or similar. So give a program a call. Even if you contact one not in your area, they should be connected with national orgs or knowledgeable individuals who can help you find stuff.

I don’t know much about your level of function and I’m sure adaptive aquatics programs vary by location. I recommend looking into adaptive sports organizations near you and contacting them with your questions.

And I'm in San diego, where I think the adaptive sports programs are pretty good. At least judging by the number of flyers I get in the mail. It might be time to get a little more out of my comfort zone.
