That just came across my news feed, pretty messed but I can see it. There is so much inaccessibility here and even when they say they are accessible, they really aren't. I know as devotees, we always looks at these things too and how many times can I see that a place is definitely not accessible. It's no wonder that PWD don't want to be out and about. Watch the whole thing even after the commercials, that's when they will actually show the news story www.yahoo.com/news/humiliating-denver-official-tried-lift-203746148.html

This is what I am concerned about. How many accessible stages are there? How many times a week would I have to get used to being hauled up and down...arg.

I don't know about everywhere but here... A door to a business/public building can be considered "handicap accessible" if it either has electronic button, it's wider than regular doors, or it is lighter than a normal door. Doesn't have to have all of them, just one! Hell, mall here only has one entrance with a button, it's ridiculous!

What's wild to me is in the twitter thread people are calling out the people around him for not helping, not realizing he probably didn't want help, and said outrage would be a hundreds times more productive if directed into simple word: "ramp".

this might sound incredibly stupid, but back in my late teens/early 20s, i had plans to do stand up and plans to start a couple punk bands with friends, and one of the biggest reasons i never actually did either thing was because i couldn't think of a single comedy club or bar with an accessible stage. the idea of being hoisted onto a stage to do 5 minutes of dogshit open mic trash or 20 minutes of shitty half-baked crust punk, sounded absolutely humiliating. so i just never bothered to try. just like...broadcasting how comically crippled i am to a ton of strangers before absolutely sucking shit at something in front of them is just a completely obscene idea. in my mind that's like as vulnerable as doing it naked. shit, now that i think about it, maybe i'd rather just get naked and then do 5 minutes of absolute dogwater comedy. that actually feels less vulnerable in my crappy brain.

Does anyone else think it’s weird that he is paraplegic but uses a power chair? He looks really bad at transferring too. I wonder if he’s new to this lifestyle.
Anyways, it illustrates the reality we all face. Accessibility is an afterthought, and there ain’t a free market solution to fix it, because it’s inherently unprofitable. Gotta force people to care. A couple weeks ago I went to attend a documentary screening about pig farming in North Carolina. When I got there, I learned that the meeting place was at the top of a huge flight of stairs. So I said fuck it and left. It’s partially my fault that I didn’t think to check ahead (I’m a wing it type of guy), but also pretty disgusting how so many “woke” people don’t even consider our existence. I rarely see us mentioned in the pantheon of marginalized people such as racial minority, trans, etc. Even though we are all important and all part of the same fight.

This truly is messed up. Any suggestions on how to fix this mess? I dunno, should he have sued the venue? I'm not sure if that would make much of a difference. It's definitely time for a second ADA with actual teeth, in terms of enforcement.

Exactly and I think that’s messed up in itself just because something is considered handicap accessible doesn’t mean it is actually handicap accessible ! I agree with you it is ridiculous!

There's no mention of any prep work he or his people did before the event. Did he look it up or call them or go there beforehand to get an idea of how the place was laid out? Did they turn down a request to move it to somewhere accessible? Could he have spoken from a different location in that room that wasn't on stage? Until there the world is 100% wheelchair accessible, I know that it's on me to know what a venue/location is set up like and if I need to talk to the powers at be to attempt to accommodate me.
I've been using a mobility scooter for 36 years. Being carried, lifted, or transferred in front of strangers when there's limited accessibility options is fucking humiliating, so I deeply empathize with this gentleman. However, unless there was a performative aspect to this incident, I don't really understand why it came to this.
Edit: I live near Denver. This building is from 1926. So yes, it's certainly in need of some updates. I wouldn't want to need to use a restroom there!

I stopped going to the movie theater because it was literally impossible to get into the handicap seating, back row with wall behind it. Even if you were lowered down in a crane I don't think you would fit. So I have to sit in the aisle. It was crap
