Judy was a founder of the disability rights movement that led to the enforcement of Section 504 and the passage of the ADA. The access to public spaces and rights that disabled people currently have in the US wouldn't be anywhere near what they are now without her leadership and work as an activist over the years. If you haven't already, I highly recommend watching Crip Camp to see some great footage of her organizing work in the 70s and to get a glimpse into the disability rights movement and how hard disabled activists worked to secure these rights.

I was thinking of posting this as well. Crip Camp was SUCH a great movie.
I can’t remember where I saw/heard this discussion… someone was talking about the Oscar stage being inaccessible until… I thought it was before last year, but it was the one where all the Crip Camp folks, including Judy Heumann and Jim LeBrecht, were sitting up front. Apparently the only reason why there was a ramp in the first place was because Jim LeBrecht made a big deal about it. Which is incredibly stupid considering all the gowns and heels and such that make traversing a very shiny, no-railing set of steps a dangerous proposition.
Judy Heumann was a hero to a lot of people. It was great watching her do so.

I'm going to have to give that crib camp another viewing. I just remembered that I never finished it. Seems like quite a place.
I'll try to catch that memorial service as well.

It's incredible and impressive how much she and others in the film accomplished through non-violent protest. I was really inspired by how seminal this group of people were in the larger civil rights movement. I also, of course, loved the part where they had a giant STD outbreak at the camp - and they seemed fairly proud of that fact. That’ll remind everyone that disabled people have sex, all right 😂

We lost a giant in the community. I know she has inspired and motivated me.. AND now that she is gone.. (more than ever) I feel even more obligated and duty bound to fight and work harder.
Wishing and hoping for the next generation of activists cut of her cloth to advance basic access and disability civil rights. WE ARE LONG OVERDUE for the next chapter in our story as a community.

RIP Judy. We, the folks at PD, will continue to fight the battle you began for disability rights now and into the near term future, and not just in the USA, but across the globe. #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights
