No Medicaid buy in in your state? There is, but nobody seems to know how to assist, been working on it since May. Try Disability Rights [your state]? North Carolina had to be sued to get it to work right. I would love for there to be some way for my regular, employer provided Healthcare plan to cover my attendant care services. Right now, I spend about 40K a year right out of my pocket. It's ridiculous. Why bother getting off public assistance to work when so much of your pay goes right out the door to pay attendants? I am in that situation right now. To keep a positive head about it I think of it as paying to look presentable and I am contributing to the economy by employing someone, but yes it is messed up that the harder you work the less you make and there seems to be no hope for generational wealth. An employer or private Long Term Care Insurance system is never going to be viable given the current Long Term Care Insurance industry is imploding under the weight of boomers starting to draw claims. Government bail outs of those policies is very likely.

ive actually done many a protest before so this is sorta my wheelhouse as my productive free time is almost entirely dedicated to organizing. im also in the US and there’s a couple things id like to see that would immediately improve my life. i honestly think disabled people should straight up get ubi in place of like ssi or ssdi with zero financial penalty for working either. living with a disability is just too much of a financial disadvantage to have these restrictions. universal healthcare is an imperative. and also definitely echoing others here also that PWDs should always be able to choose their own PCA and not have to pay out of pocket for that either. really gonna show my whole self now tho lol; but as much as i do care and fight for these causes, these wishes are just too inside the box. bc — given the socio-economic system we live in — do i think these improvements will ever happen? for too many reasons, unfortunately, no :/ but that doesn’t mean we stop trying tho bc like nihilism just isn’t an option for me lol. but what i mostly do now with organizing is less fighting within this system and more fighting the system itself 😉 on that note tho i have a really good book rec and if anyone is interested i have it in PDF, mobi and epub formats.

This bill would be huge if passed: www.huffpost.com/entry/democrats-legislation-home-community-services-disabled-people_n_640be0b1e4b0ebf03d3618f1"The Home and Community Based Services Access Act, initially introduced in 2021 with the support of disability organizations, would mandate the services as a Medicaid benefit and increase funding for them. It would also incentivize states to expand these programs and eliminate long waitlists. In conjunction with the Better Care Better Jobs legislation, wages would be increased for care givers." - Bans waiting lists for Home and Community Based Services
- Sets a federal standard of services, including consumer directed care (which most states already have), so people can more easily move between states.

The DIA is great but completely dead on arrival because it would add Long Term Care Services to health insurance policies and would increase premiums at least 2x. Plus I'm not sure I want pressure from Corporate America (the holders of most health insurance policies) influencing disability support policies, privatization of Medicaid and LTSS have already gotten people killed.

Plus I'm not sure I want pressure from Corporate America (the holders of most health insurance policies) influencing disability support policies I can only imagine what an utter disaster this would be. I mean, they've already done such a fantastic job with simple health insurance...and their advocacy for disability inclusion is unmatched 🤣 However, I can see how employers will likely be at least somewhat involved in any real solution because the care economy is significantly made up of family members and loved ones, and having access to services through an employer could really benefit them. Washington state (where I work) passed a law about a year ago mandating that all employees either pay into the state Long Term Care program through paycheck distributions OR buy a private policy that meets certain requirements. It's too new yet to really know how it's going to play out, but I imagine there will be a lot of angry and disillusioned people when they try to use it and discover what they were ACTUALLY paying for.
