There are two general terms associated with devs; devotees, and admirers. I think the term admirer has all but disappeared fro the lingo; I don't hear it used too often anymore. I feel like devotee sounds too strong of a word; like devotees are often associated with Hinduism and relate to those who are devoted to their spiritual beliefs of a particular god/gods in the faith. Much as I'm sure a few PWDs here wouldn't mind a bit of worship, I think the term is probably a little too heavy. On the flip side, admirer sounds a little weak. Like "oh I admire that guy in the wheelchair" sounds more like inspiration porn than a desire to actually be with them. So, just like we've accepted the label of "PWD" or person/people with disability/ies, why not PAD? People/person Attracted to Disability. It makes more sense, because that's what it is. Yes, there are varying levels and it varies by each person; some might see it as merely a fetish, others as a sexuality or lifestyle, but the base of it is still attraction. So why not PWD/PAD relations? Just my three cents (inflation raised it from two.)

Generally, I'm not a fan of overly labeling groups of people, as there will always be significant numbers that feel the new label doesn't adequately fit their situation. With this proposal, I'd anticipate quite a few devs not liking the phrase "attracted to disability," as they feel they are attracted to the person, with the disability being an attribute that adds to the attraction. And who needs another acronym?! Lol

I like it. I’ve been toying around with “attracted to disability,” or “A2D” perhaps, but I like the symmetry of PAD and PWD. I hear what you’re saying about the emphasis on the disability and not the person but PAPWD doesn’t work and at the end of the day it us the disability which is the feature that sets us apart from others. Yes we all have our individual preferences, aesthetic and personal, in addition to disability but it’s seeing disability as attractive that unites us as a group. We need to be united as a group lest we are lumped in with pretenders, wannabes, stalkers, and worse. We already have this creepy label of devotee that we’ve agreed (for decades at this point) needs to go due to its association with religiosity. I’ll take PAD as a label any day over devotee!

Quad787 that was also my concern, that they're attracted to the person, not the disability, but as ayla said, it is the disability that is a uniting factor on all those who would normally have the label "dev/devotee/PAD/admire" etc. It might not be perfect, and I'm very much willing to entertain other ideas. It was just a spur of the moment idea, but as Ayla said, PAD/PWD does seem to mesh in a weird way.

I really appreciate this reply. I'm more than happy to use whatever term people prefer to be called. To borrow a legal term, I think I lack "Standing" in this debate. I'll be the first to acknowledge I don't know at all what it's been like for Devs, beyond the conversations I've had. And whether it's the new term or the old term, it won't be applied to me anyway.

Can we be PALS? As I’m a Person Attracted to Lacking Standing… 😂

I've never been a fan of labels. I think they encourage a mindset of separation and make it too easy to leave people/groups out, single people/groups out, and have an "other" mentality. However, let's face it, we live in a world of labels, and that isn't likely to ever change, so we might as well have one that better suits us. I do really like how the terms PWD/PAD naturally fit together...just like WE naturally fit together as people. I don't know that it's my favorite term, but I'd happily accept it as I don't have any better ideas, and it's infinitely better than devotee.

Although "lacking standing" is a term that could be derisively applied in a sexual context. May need to rethink that. Lol

ayla Quad787 Sorry to burst your bubble, but PALS is already taken by another group in the disability community (People with ALS). Although, I do also love your version of it. It rolls off the tongue quite nicely 😁

I’ve decided what we change the name of this site to! It’s GS, or “Gimp Sluts”. You’re welcome.
