I am old: The song was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles and in fact, MTV did kill radio and made the music industry totally reliant on image instead of sound. A great deal of the '80's was reflected in that attitude until Nirvana brought it quite back down to earth.

There was Devo, the music group - they actually created the first music video with computer animation if I recall correctly (I was just discussing recently how 'Money for Nothing' was also a pioneer in the computer animation field as well (and in my opinion a much better song by a better group )).

I do remember "Video Killed The Radio Star" as one of the first vids I saw, too - how prophetic!! But, really, radio was pretty hot in the 80s...it'snow that it totally sucks, except for my 88.5 FM community radio in Tampa - listener supported radio, no commercials, great multi-formats. Also, I remember Wall of Voodoo's vid "Mexican Radio"...one damn weird vid and song, it was great to kick off the 80s, something so non-commercial.
Let's not forget our fav VJs. I had a crush on Martha Quinn and Downtown Julie Brown!!

i was in my 20s, got hurt in 1980, spent the whole decade taking classes in college, rebuilding my life by messing around with the neighbor's wife. lol Her husband never suspected me coz the chair thang. This area of Fla grew sooo fast as people from the Northeast/Midwest flooded in to escape the brutal winters. Fubb, remember Live Aide? That was the coolest concert ever. I couldn't drive until '85, but I did get to see Survivor and Brian Adams, and I loved both at that time. Ballads were big, like the hair, in the 80s!! Hell, Journey was a band created around ballads. Def Leopard was too much for me, but I liked Guns n Roses, Motely Crew and INXS, but I loved with little known Little Steven van Zant's solo LP in 1984, "Voice of America." I know AB knows this dude!! lol

Faith, Styx and Kansas were some of my favs in my teens of the 70s. I saw both as a teenager, and both were amazing. Actually, Tommy Shaw and Steve Walsh are my fav vocalists of all time. I'll never forget watching Shaw rip a guitar solo right in front of me on top of an amp, fan blowing his hair back with purple light on him. At 17, I was so moved!!
Fubb, I remember Geldof being the first rockstar turn humanitarian, and that wave is still going with many other stars. He had a connection with Michael Hutchence, didn't he??? Ahhhh, my Jersey boy, Jon Bon Jovi...loved "Livin on a Prayer' and "Dead or Alive'.

Windy, I love that song, and sing it every time I hear it...matter of fact, it's on my computer, think I'll listen now!
Fubb, great background on Hutchence!! I knew there was some tension of some kind. You're right, he was INXS...giant charismatic dude!!

Lil Laura, I just heard an even 'funnier' story of how the band Boston just scored a new singer after the suicide of Brian Delp last Summer, one of the absolute great vocalists of the arena-rock bands. Tom Scholz, the guitarist/lead songwriter of Boston, was looking on Myspace, runs across some 40-something dude doing a Boston song in Kareoke fashion. The guy's daughter posted it coz her dad was a big fan since age 12, AND, the guy could really sing it well, which, if you know Boston's music, ain't easy to pull off. Tom said, 'he couldn't believe this guy sounded so much like Brian.' So, he sends him a message, offering him an audition. Now, this chubby, anything but rockstar looking married guy who'd NEVER been in a band is now going on tour this Summer with his all time fav band.
Talk about dreams come true, sheeesh!!!
