I just finished watching a film by Anton Corbjin called 'Control'. Beautifully done, but depressing. It is a new independent film that took a bunch of awards at Cannes. It was a breakout role for British actor Sam Riley who does an amazing, amazing portrayal of Ian Curtis who was the lead singer for Joy Division, as well as a severe epileptic. The movie deals beautifully with the struggle of being faced with a disability (in this case seizures).
Not for the morose.

We did some talking on the board about 'Quid Pro Quo' when it first came out and I thought they handled the fetish culture in a rather unpleasant way. The gal in the film comes off as pretty mentally disturbed from what I could see. Brendan, here's that other thread on this movie. Quid Pro Quo is coming out on limited release in just a couple days, on June 13. "Limited release" means what? That means it'll be at alternative movie theaters in big cities? I'm very unlikely to see it, then, until it comes out on DVD. The more I hear about it, though, the more I dread it! This blog had some interesting things to say about it...

If you register at the website (it's free), you can watch a video from the musical. The best scene (best devo scene, anyway) is 1:57 minutes in. The footage in that scene is clearly from a rehearsal production, because he's got a really boring chair, whereas in other scenes in the video he gets a snazzier one (also, the lyrics in that scene are different from the current ones. I haven't seen the show but I got a bootlegged audio recording of it. If any body is interested I can pass it along).

It was a breakout role for British actor Sam Riley who does an amazing, amazing portrayal of Ian Curtis who was the lead singer for Joy Division, as well as a severe epileptic. I watched Control last night. The intensity of Riley's performance, especially when he sang, was really amazing. The scenes of Curtis working at an employment agency, placing PWDs in jobs, were also interesting. After his diagnosis, he telephones Corinne, a young woman with epilepsy whom he'd previously helped; the scene was so subtle and incredible.
