well, ladies (and any dev gents who ever want to join us), it's that time of the month again. lol
our Skype chat is scheduled for tomorrow night (Wednesday, November 30th) at 8pm EST. please send Emma a private message with your info if you'd like to participate and haven't joined us before.
sooo... this month's read was "Double Take" by Kevin Michael Connolly.
and this thread is for pre-chat discussion or for anyone who read the book and would like to comment/discuss it but can't attend the chat.
so.... thoughts?

i really liked it. i liked his style of writing and thought the book gave an interesting perspective on his experience of being born with no legs and the reactions inherent in choosing an 'alternate form of transportation' for mobility.
it was low on the dev-o-meter for me. but i enjoyed it all the same.
he seems like a really neat guy with a fun sense of humour.

ah this is terrible timing! it turns out one of my best friends is having a bit of a personal crisis, so he and i are having some consolatory post-work drinks tomorrow. i may make the call, but it's unlikely. emma, I will send you my skype name just in case!

I loved the book! Very high on the dev meter for me That photo on the cover of the paperback edition, OMG, totally worth the price by itself. He can be funny, but it was also very moving to read about him struggling with self-esteem and feeling left out at a young age. It was interesting too that even after he started taking pictures he had a lot of self-doubt, and worried a lot about hurting other people's feelings. One might expect him to have more of a "fuck you" attitude but he comes across as quite sensitive. It's actually his girlfriend who is more tough. Oh and when he mentioned getting turned on when she hit him in the face...OMG! so hot! my kink is showing... I have to say though, the writing strikes me as a bit amateurish. It's good but not as polished as a professional author. He misuses a lot of words, and I'm surprised the editors at a major publisher let him get away with it. Using language creatively is one thing, but to me it just read as diction errors. It reminded me a lot of the way teenagers on Fictionpress write when they're trying to be clever. So mean, I know! But I still enjoyed the book.
