So I decided that I wanted to do audio versions of my books. (I've always wanted to be an audio book narrator!) But now I'm working on Breath(e) and I just got to Ethan...And his speech is described as slow and almost a stutter. I don't know if I can really do that! I feel weird about trying to imitate the speech of someone with CP.

Would you consider a volunteer reader for various parts? Male/female characters? People can suspend their belief when a male reads a female character and visa versa. I am sure the same can be done with this character.

I hope so!
Do you think it would be weird if the text says that his voice is this way and then the reader completely ignores it?!

No, I've never listened to books on tape much (I'm easily distracted anyway... but I'm ESPECIALLY distractable when it comes to noises.) but I thought they were generally read by one person? I bet Charlton Heston didn't do the voices when he did The Bible audio.

Yeah I'd just do what other authors do for their audio books.

I have listened to only one audio book which was a narration of a Star Wars book. The narrator (who was just a single person) was exceptionally talented in imitating the various characters' voices (like Yoda, Obi-wan, etc) which are known from the movies and giving you the impression that it was that specific person/actor talking in between his neutral narrator voice.

I bet Charlton Heston didn't do the voices when he did The Bible audio. I will forever now hear Charlton Heston doing his whiney, female jewish voice while reading this... Martha: “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” ...and I will also forever blame you, Inigo

I bet I can top that. How about the same story, but with Cartman's whiny voice? Even worse

Have you ever listened to the audiobook of Lysa Williams' book, "Soundless"? The main character has a stutter and the reader does a simply amazing job with it.

Unfortuantely, I'm not a great actor or imitator of voices. I really want to narrate my own work. I absolutely love narrating, but I can't do voices. I guess if I'm not trying to do anyone else's voice, I won't worry about doing anything special for Ethan's voice.
There's a lot of variety in audio books. Some are like productions with different people for different parts, and some are one person who does all the different voices, and some are just straight reading.

I don't think it's "neutral"! I love to read books out loud and I think I have an interesting voice to listen to, I just don't do character voices. I guess I'll have to get it finished and up and see what feedback I get about it.

Ruth, although many people already have heard my voice which may mean it could not work? I will gladly give it a go for you if you want a volunteer to read the part for you. I have always enjoyed articulating books out loud although rarely do it. I certainly talk enough in life and can keep people's attention when talking! I can equally send them to sleep! LOL I have not read the book I must confess and so have no real idea of how much there is to do or the storyline and characters traits except for the fact he has a stutter. I also owe you my thoughts from the book report, it will arrive soon! :-) PM me is the idea is of interest to?

I would definately get it with Spurs voice on it, if the open chat was anything to go by Sounded like Michael Cain but sexier.
