So limplegs , i guess the vila is a private place not a hotel that is open to public access? It's a private house that we rented from Airbnb. There are a bunch of awesome places on there limplegs Did you book it as an accessible place, or was the design just useable ? We are struggling to find places when we search specifically for wheelchair access.

@delight oh god tell me about it... Using Airbnb you can tick the accessibility options you need. It's not foolproof though as a lot of hosts don't know what they're talking about. It's best to look at pictures to see if it looks accessible, then message the host to ask for details or measurements.

I've only booked an accessible accommodation through AirBnB once and I found the accessibility options really weird. There were so many options which seemed to overlap or I wasn't sure what they meant. When I ticked all the ones I thought would be relevant, AirBnB told me that there were no places for those search criteria in the area. So yeah, not awfully helpful. So I did what you described and messaged the host of one of the places with questions about details. Took a while until they answered, turned out it wasn't accessible. I realized this would take ages, so then I decided to just spam a whole bunch of hosts with the same message Ended up having to write quite a few "Thank you so much for your detailed answer, but we found another place."

Yikes. I've explored the AirBnB accessibility options and also found zero hits... Even when I just asked for an entry without stairs. So frustrating, and it really made me realize how basically all residences are built with steps to get inside. I started looking at houses while out and about, and sure enough, just about every single one has a front porch with one or more stairs. That's going to be a hard pass for a power chair user. Ugh. That's a good idea with spamming a message looking for specifics, Amee. Extra work, but I guess everything is extra work when accessibility is usually an afterthought (at best.)

Amee yeah it can be frustrating. You have to just tick the bare minimum that you need (step free shower, step free entrance etc.) and research those properties. I've been to places that seemed perfect but once I got there I couldn't get into the bathroom or something, at that point you just have to book a hotel (a lot of hotels have at least one accessable room).

We've had so many disasters by booking private accommodation where you ask the question....owner says accessible....arrive and cant get in. We end up booking major/chain hotels which is really boring but you are (mostly) guaranteed a fully accessible room. I keep thinking i will be brave and more adventurous but if its wrong then its totally wrong, cant do much when faced with stairs or unusable bathrooms. I wonder if its worth a thread so people can recommend specific places/hotels/towns etc that theyve already visited ? As pd members are worldwide it could be really useful ?

Hope that comes through... if not, here is the link! postimg.cc/NKN0Ztj4My neck of the woods in New Hampshire got dumped with 23+ (and counting!) Inches of snow since midnight. That's quite the accumulation in 13 hours. Hope any fellow New Englanders are able to dig themselves out!
