I'm most curious about how it feels to get the tattoo. I have yet to come up with a design that I'd like to always have on my body. Likely, I'll never find one. How would those who have tatts describe the sensation?

I'm most curious about how it feels to get the tattoo. I have yet to come up with a design that I'd like to always have on my body. Likely, I'll never find one. How would those who have tatts describe the sensation? It's just like all things "it passes". (For me) I deal with pain 24/7, but it's just that, I deal with it.. With a tattoo, I feel like I felt the pain (yes), but I was left with a super cool piece of art afterwords. Unlike my SCI pain which just leaves behind a headache or some lost energy. So it is Very satisfying (for me). The feeling: I think it kinda feels like a hot fishing hook being drug above the skin (It's not that bad).. But honestly a walk threw the park in comparison with my surgeries. And like I said "it passes", the pain. I have a whole sleeve, and there was a few tender areas, but you get threw them fast, then its onto the next spot.. Some of those spots: The soft part of under the arm (was the biggest, softest spot) The hardest far as pain. The elbow, the vane area where the arm bends, the wrist, stomach. Pretty much the area of the body that don't get touched much or the 'baby meat" inside of arms/legs, ribs. For the under part of the arm I was sure to take a pain med. before the appointment. lol That is always an option for us people with disabilities, as it's usually pretty easy to get pain meds. It helps..

I am suddenly feeling ALL THE TOUGH. lol Because I've never had a tat that felt like a hot knife. My first tat was just under my sternum and it was probably the most painful. Bits of it cover the cartilage over the edge of the ribs. That's a good bit of suck and I remember it being very acute but other than that the only problem I've ever had was the amount of time I spent folded in half, with needle to skin, on my back piece/large tramp stamp. I had an experience where I got hot and had to take a break because I thought I might throw up. But after a 10-15 minute break I was fine-ish. I did feel mildly bad over the next few days. I have never considered myself a particularly tough person or think that I have a really high pain tolerance. (Although, my first tat experience, I went first and my friend complained later that it hurt way more than she thought it would because I was so still. But, you know, they're drawing on your skin with a needle. I didn't want to move and wind up with some weird line somewhere.) It's all really subjective, depending on YOUR tolerance to pain. However, I have found some "tattoo pain scales" that illustrate the pain levels you can expect in different spots. Again, you'll note that they differ some. They are likely to be humongous because I'm not moving them to shrink them. You'll note there's no picture of the back of this first one. I thought this was funny/interesting because of the implication that women feel less pain than men? I have tats in the following zones: 67% chance of dragons (not a dragon), Buying me a drink will totally work, and I will never have a job that pays taxes.

Agreed, after a while it feels like skin's being sliced open with a razorblade. Smaller stuff (lettering, basic outlines) doesn't really hurt at all. For me, bony bits don't hurt either, it's just vibration. The more fat there is, the more it burns:) But I don't have tats on the most painful areas (like feet) so I don't really know? Anyway, it feels good. I'm pretty bone-y, in more ways than one I also get an odd satisfaction out of getting shots and other externally inflicted pain, to a point. Biting, CHECK! Maybe I'll just go get a tattoo without ink so I can feel the sensation, but not the buyer's remorse. Thanks for the vivid descriptions. I'm even more curious now. Can I get a volunteer to hold my hand, just in case?

Lately, I'm thinking a lot in my first tattoo... Then, I've found this drawining and I thought this could probably fits for me: Only the TRUE NERDS here will get the meaning! The size will be about 3 inches radius. Based on the "pain scale for tattoos" above, I'll choose between two locations: One of my calves (it will be visible only for close people) Or my upper back, just under my hindhead.

I knew a girl who took pain pills while getting tattooed but it seemed like cheating to me. The pain is a huge part of the process for me but I was a cutter in my younger years... Anyways, I'm trying to find a good artist to draw my first "original" piece i.e. not off the wall, and its harder than I thought it would be. Here's my last one

Not a cutter but I agree about the pain. I love your Phoenix! And I'm surprised that your art has mostly all been from the wall. I only have one piece "from the wall" and that was actually from his book of photos of stuff he'd already done but I'm counting it. I've had really good luck (for the most part) with taking bits and pieces of pictures to them and having them put it together like I want. I DID pick the lotus flower that's used in my large tramp stamp from the wall... but it's surrounded by other things. You make me curious as to the ratio of flash art vs original on peeps bodies. Pretty sure my next one will be some form of this guy (Perhaps done in turquoise to match my others...) with the words, "Whatever the Monster looks like, I will hug it." worked around it in a "spooky" font. Oh, and I want it to be smiley instead of sad.
