Not a wheeler spotting out in the wild but still fascinating: I recorded a show on TV and I fast forwarded through the commercials with 16x speed. Still, I was able to spot a second of a commercial where a wheelchair basketball team was shown. π

I'm on holiday just now and oh my goodness there's this hot, fit wheeler guy at my hotel who is a frequent user of the pool. The hotel does not have a hoist so he has to get himself in and out of the pool by relying on his strong upper body.
He can get into the pool quite easily so that's not so devvy but getting out is quite a different story! There's steps leading up to the entrance and exit of the pool and today he brought his chair to the edge and had to move his legs into position by dragging them with his hands, which he took great care into arranging so it would seem he has very little, if any, use of his legs.
It took about three attempts for him to finally get into his chair, the first time one of his legs slipped as he tried to push himself up by using the grab rail and his chair for some leverage and he ended up back in the water and down a couple of steps. The little splash he made as he tried to regain his balance was so cute! Then the second time his hand seemed to slip a little at the last second and he ended up underneath the grab rail and he finally managed it on the third attempt. Once in his chair again he moved so quick and confidently, it was such a contrast to the position of weakness he had been in just a moment before. The fact he had no top on was just even better!
As he headed back to his sunbed he looked around him to see if anyone had seen him and no-one seemed to take much notice, except one very lucky lady over the other side who thankfully had dark sunglasses on so that he couldn't see how much I had enjoyed that!
Hopefully he's here for a few more days yet. π

Today I ended up a little bit closer to him (not through choice I might add, I was actually down at the pool before him!) and I observed him as he transferred to and from his chair and the sun lounger. There was a near accident as he tried to get up from the lounger and it started to tip as he moved to get into his chair but managed to avoid it just in case. This is the best trip I've had in a long time!

So, I just got back from two weeks in Ireland, and in those two weeks, where I was like everywhere and all over, I saw but one wheeler...one guy in a chair, and he was a German tourist. Ireland is not very accessible from what I saw, and again, I saw nothing as far as wheelers go, even in the cities.

I'll make sure to cross Ireland off my list of places to go!

Bad news with my wheeler guy - he seems to have sussed out how to get out of the pool first time. Don't get me wrong seeing him transferring to and from his chair into and out of the pool still gives me dev tingles but I can't lie, I did enjoy the couple of unsuccessful attempts he did which saw him splash back into the pool before trying again!
