Did anyone else read Jean Little books? She's blind, and wrote a lot of characters with disabilities...mostly girls as far as I remember, but she was a favourite author of my childhood too. I believe she's from a city pretty close to mine. I'm a teacher-librarian and the schools I've worked in have all still had lots of her books available. I loved her books as a kid! She actually visited my elementary school to talk about her work and having a disability.

My first dev realization crush was Kevin in Joan of Arcadia. I was in my early teens then. I watched a lot of the Disney channel growing up... I remember really liking Miracle in Lane 2. I'm sure there was probably other things that I just don't remember! Oh yeah, I think Kevin in Joan of Arcadia was probably one of my very first dev realizations too!!! I was in my early teens too!!

Wow this is a flashback for sure.... So i remember 2 McD's commercials one with sign language and one with a woman in a wheelchair. An old 80's tv show called Sister Kate which had a young girl in a wheelchair in it. I remember the quad on highway to heaven. So many different flashbacks of various tv shows and movies thru the years! The secret Garden because of Colin, a made for tv movie with Kirstie Alley, Swoon an episode of Lois and Clark with a blind superman (be still my heart!) There's probably a dozen other flashbacks that helped shape my early dev years that i can't remember! When i started reading... I would read and check out EVERY book i could find on Helen Keller cuz surely no one would know my secret they would just think i was studying a remarkable historical figure they would never guess it was devvy for me. There were always little flashes of things... I remember a sweet valley high book with a blind charachter. I read a lot of books by Lurlene McDaniel they were more about children/teens facing medical conditions vs disability but something about it pushed my dev buttons. Deenie by Judy Blume was devvy for me in my early adolescence! Its funny i think i felt "dev starved" and would latch onto anything that pushed that button... tastes have refined over the years...
Its fun to read thru and see similar experiences shared among us... Something that's intriguing me maybe is a lot of my influences are female where most of the others mentioned are male... thats a head scratcher.

Helen Keller, Secret Garden, Heidi. These were when I was pretty young so had the desire and interest in disability but maybe not the sexual maturity yet? Pretty much male stories now though still interesting to see how people cope and lead their lives in all kinds of ways.

Betty The Other Side Of The Mountain! That's one I remember from my childhood, watching it while my mum ironed. I've seen or read many of the same movies/books as posted above. One that really moved me as a kid was "The World According to Garp."
