Just a funny I saw online. I'm not one of those who are too Trump focused to take things seriously.

I haven't contributed to this thread because a lot of really good advice already on here. Just wanted to say to my friends and all the PD community, keep well, follow the medical advice and I hope to see us all around here for many more years.

They closed the schools here for 3 weeks (4 for us, since the 4th week is Spring Break). The kids love this of course. But it did cause everyone to freak out and buy a bunch of non-perishable food and TP.

Heads up to those in the US, I expect the Governors to start locking down their States in the next week or 2.

My approach would have been to have the high risk people self-isolate, and then have everyone else practice proper hygiene and social distancing. But none of this closure/canel shit. We are going to end up fucking up so many people's lives unnecessarily. Many small businesses will close. Sure the no-interest loans will help, but they are still loans that need to be repaid, while the revenue lost is forever. A 10% hit on revenue could easily translate into a 50%+ hit on profit. Can you imagine suddenly making only half what you did last year?

Yeah it seems really shitty that a lot of people are going to lose money (real people, don’t give a fuck about rich people at top of corporations). Like people who have to live paycheck to paycheck could get really screwed. The NBA concession people? What about teachers, are they still getting paid? That was the first thing I thought when Italy went on lockdown.
I don’t know if at some point they will make me stay home from my job, but there is work I could do from home, so hopefully I won’t miss out on paychecks. I’ve been fantasizing about getting quarantined for 2 weeks and playing video games and shit, but when it seems a bit more real it’s slightly less cool. And I worry about my clients who are more old or frail, that I prefer them to not be dead, and I hope they will be well.

This was predictable a few weeks ago. As soon as we started seeing real numbers from Italy and not the bullshit numbers from China.
A week ago I was saying thatSpain and france were a week to 10 days behind Italy and about the same again for the UK. The very serious measure that are now being taken may slow that.
Instead of reacting early, some are reacting late and so need to compensate.
I went to Melbourne on the weekend to the F1 , and I know that sounds like hypocrisy, however there was 21 confirmed cases in a state the size of the UK with 6.5 million people. The night before the start of the Grand Prix weekend, ONE Mclaren mechanic tested positive, leading to the cancellation of the entire weekend, less than 90 minutes before the start of practice.
In the last 2 days most gatherings of 500+ people have been cancelled, New Zealand has 14 day quarantine for anyone entering the country. There is also reports that the UK may suggest up to 4 months self Isolation for anyone over 70.
I still think we need to see whether it is Italy or South Korea that is the outlier, but my guess is that France and spain will prove over the next 7 days that Italy is the norm. Italy has the second oldest population in the world, but still the death toll vs (Number of infections minus 7 days) is staggering

Can you imagine suddenly making only half what you did last year? The economic hit is unavoidable at this point, and I agree the economic package was very weak. Governors are going to prioritize their health systems for now so they don't end up like Italy.

I am appreciating the international info I have gotten in this thread.
Here in So. Cal my kids are out of school for 5 weeks (that includes 2 weeks of spring break). All large gatherings are cancelled. Little league baseball has been cancelled, concert tours are cancelled, the grocery stores are empty, ski areas are closed, even Disneyland closed and they have only ever closed 3 times in history. Whats nuts to me is there are still people posting on FB about how this is not that serious, how its "just a flu". I don't get how a worldwide pandemic is about who likes or doesn't like Trump. Makes me sick TBH.
I spent the day in my house learning to play Pokemon with my son, making brownies with my daughter, weeding my yard for 3 hours and them supporting my favorite local sushi restaurant getting take out. They are usually packed on Sat and had only 4 tables filled. I still have to work but fingers crossed I won't have to travel to 2-4 different peoples homes every day in the next week.

I look at my apple newsfeed which shows me all the different news stations. Seen multiple articles from Fox where they interview someone who had mild symptoms and tell people not to panic. At the very end of the article it briefly mentions that symptoms can be worse in people who are elderly. Doesn’t mention people dying and shit. Why is this Australian piece of shit Rupert Murdoch fucking up our country? Can’t he go fuck up New Zealand or something? Or better yet, just liquidate Fox News and donate all the money to charity...

Australia has just introduced a raft of new measures in the last hour. Anyone entering Australia into quarantine for 14 days, non essential gathering of over 500 people now illegal. Lots and lots of other measures
I have been saying this for a few weeks, but it appears new modelling is being done using numbers from Italy and Europe, not from those lying pieces of shit in China.
Worst case scenario in my state of 7 million people is over 80,000 hospitalised. A lot different to the chines numbers. and speaking of China, I think it will blow up again as soon as they try and open up the country.
I have just been speaking to a Doctor who I race with, as our big race at Easter is cancelled, and he showed me an email from a colleague in Belgium who said that 20% of the people in Belgium who have been intubated are healthy and under 50 years old, with the youngest on intubation being 16 years old. Additionally the cases are spreading quickly in Queensland where it is almost always over 30C (86f) so don't rely on warm weather stopping it.
Again, I am not an expert, but those numbers in Italy are a concern. It looks like the autorities worldwide are waking up to that
Stay safe my people

At this point, the problem is not China, but countries with weak central governments and poor health care systems, where it will surely spread the fastest. Malaysia is on the brink of mass infection stemming from a religious event, and their government just went through a huge upheaval last week. The biggest outbreaks so far in S Korea, Iran and Italy are all linked to church/mosque attendance. Although the Chinese government has made mistakes, the Chinese people have sacrificed tremendously to contain the virus. Those efforts bought the rest of the world several weeks to start preparing, but the US squandered that time with nonsense like "maybe it will go away in warmer weather."
It's still an open question why the virus has been spreading differently in different places. I don't know why Japan has not (yet) been hit as hard as Italy, as Japan is a popular tourist destination from China and they had their first cases in January. Japan's containment efforts have been terrible, and they have a very large elderly population. Maybe in a week or two it will be the same there, but I would have thought the next wave outside China would hit Japan first before Europe. Meanwhile in Singapore, which also has an aging population, there have been over 200 cases with no fatalities yet, although there certainly will be in the future.
The effects on people of various ages are being oversold--just because statistically there are more fatalities among older people doesn't mean no one under 60 will get seriously ill.
Anyway I encourage everyone to watch what is happening in Asia, not just Europe/US. There are a lot of good English language news sites that give a very different picture from the US news.

Here in Albany, NY at my university all classes have been suspended until further notice and will be going online for distance learning starting next week. So I'm working on my PhD thesis from home, and communicating with my thesis advisor via email, videochat, and pictures. I'm supposed to graduate this semester, but as of now thanks to this COVID-19 pandemic, that prospect is up in the air at this point in time.

Curious to know if anyone has seen the numbers from India. Or Africa. I haven’t heard the monkeys on CNN talk about those countries. And it’s interesting considering Italy got ran over by illegal migrants as of late and then the country’s healthcare couldn’t handle the virus. Coincidence? Or cause.. I just don’t know and I’m genuinely curious about the validity of what we are being told. And not told. What’s going on in Russia with this virus?
