By chance has anyone here had experience with off-road/all terrain wheelchairs? Not the electric/scooter sort, but the manual muscle-powered sort.
I live for the outdoors in the warmer weather and with my mobility potentially being shot, I've got to consider new options.
Something like this:
Apparently the levers make it much more capable of handling outdoor terrain than merely gripping the wheelchairs.

They look cool, but from what I have seen they are also quite expensive and at least here in Germany, health insurance would not cover the cost for that. I don't know the English term for it, but several people I know have a separate front wheel with handles that is being attached to their normal wheelchair and lifts the smal front wheels off the ground,so you basically turn your wheelchair into a handbike. In Germany, you can get these on prescription and it also takes up a lot less space.

This isn't what OP is looking for, but might be of interest to some others. Off road wheelchair being developed out of Utah. I just saw a video of someone using one of these in a skate park. extrememotus.com

Try to see, they told me this one should work and be enough... until off-road does not become too hardcore at least

I think the motorised version would also be really good if you’re going any distance and if there are hills. saying that, if money isn’t a problem I think the freewheel could be useful in urban areas. Have you got one joe89 ?

No no I don't have one, I just wanted to add one extra idea 😉 I try to avoid anything unnecessary...and this does not give enough benefits from my point of view. But there are people I know who are very enthusiastic about it.

The Freewheel is awesome! It does really depend on what you are needing but in my opinion the Freewheel is a really awesome option. My ex has one and its what he uses for anything rough or slippery; grass, gravel, dirt, cobblestone even sand if its somewhat packed. It gets the little wheels off the ground and puts a bigger wheel with air in it in front. Sure the true off road wheelchairs are better but its not really realistic to switch between wheelchairs especially when traveling. With this you just pop off the wheel and you have your everyday chair again. I agree they are pricey, but if you can get insurance to pay for it or somehow not shell out the full amount it is worth having for any manual wheelchair user. I have met the creator who is also the guy in most of the scenes in the promo video. He is a incomplete quad who uses a manual chair.

I have a Stricker Lipo Smart Tetra hand-cycle. I attached a youtube link for you to see. They aren't cheap, but when it comes to your health you need to grasp the bigger picture. This hand-cycle is nice because it attaches/detaches from you wheelchair. And with the assist plus gears you can adjust the level of intensity so you get your cardiovascular workout, yet not injure yourself in the process. You an see this C-5 quad doing it all with ease. Check it out!

This look awesome I thought it was, especially for more extreme off roading where manual wheelchairs really would get wrecked. It’s also very reasonably priced compared to similar equipment. Check out his videos on YouTube, they’ve tested it in some pretty tough situations.

I’ve reached out to a few people I know who use a freewheel and I’ve been really surprised by how great they think it is. It’s still not a true off road option but I can see the benefits on normal rough ground or grass. It just seems a lot of money for such a basic piece of equipment, but like everything that should be available to pwd’s to improve their accessibility or lifestyle it comes at a price. If I was ever lucky enough to come into some money, I’d love to set up a not for profit offering disability equipment at cost price.
