My opinion on the matter is I think it's outdated I mean I get why marriage was so important about over a 100 years ago but nowadays I really don't think marriage is really needed to have a good relationship with someone having said that if I was with someone who wanted to get married I would probably just do it just to make her happy so what are your views on marriage is it really needed nowadays or is it still important for you lot

Actually, as all my friends are approaching middle age or beyond, many of them, gay as well as straight, now decide to get married after 20 or more years of living together. While marriage is certainly not needed for a good relationship, at least here in Germany it is helpful in legal terms if one of them falls sick and may not be able to make decisions for himself anymore or if you want to provide for your partner if you die, as it makes inheriting a lot easier and the surviving partner can collect widower's pension which is not possible if you just live together.

I don't even see myself being in a relationship, let alone marriage. It's a great thing for some people, and for them, I wish them all the best. Not my cuppa tea.

I see your point on the legal terms about wanting to be their for your other half on his or her death bad and the widower's pension

Well, I'm not into gambling or strippers. Only time I gambled, the hotel I stayed in had a casino and gave $20 in free coins or chips to every patron, so I went to the slots, played the coins, actually won $30 overall, and cashed that in. Only time I ever went to a strip joint was with my college buddy right after we graduated. Was totally boring and we left after an hour. Guess I'm just a dull guy.

Marriage is certainly not needed for a good relationship. And that is exactly why it is such a beautiful thing to have with another person. I got married very early, and we did not even throw a party. When I think of it now, it was such a crazy thing to do. And so it is a permanent reminder of how madly in love we have been. And I am very happy that such a thing happened to me.
*violins off*
Many of our friends are not married, or I'm not even aware of their relationship status. Marriage has a lot of practical advantages, I guess in any country in the world. But apart from the legal/financial aspects, it's a beautiful gesture to show to your partner that you want to always be there for him or her.

There's also the shitty "marriage tax" we have here in the US. A married couple making $160k total pays $8,000 more in taxes than an unmarried couple. Put that $8k/yr into a retirement account in a stock market index fund, and after 30 years you'll have over $1.5 million. That's a lot of retirement money to give up for no reason other than being married.

In Germany, many people marry in order to save on taxes, as the spouse with the bigger income usually pays a lot less after the marriage. Plus, if one partner gives up his or her job, they have free health insurance with their husband or wife.

But if it's very lopsided they will often pay less. The tax rules were made to give a benefit to married couples because it was rare for women to have jobs or equal pay jobs. But now having 2 working spouses is common and they often get screwed.
