Many years ago I used to write to Dan Murphy’s sister. For your younger generation Dan Murphy was an actor, a quadriplegic actor. We wrote a few times online and he always said hello. I think he had been in films, something about Mary, kingpin, stuck on you.

Danny has had a couple small parts already I hope he can land something big. I’ve communicated with him on IG a few times. He’s a really cool dude!

Side note/little rant.... I’ve been watching the show Mom which I really do like, it’s pretty funny, but I can’t help but be annoyed every single time the boyfriend is shown. He’s a para in the show. Came onto the show like season 3 maybe as a para. All he ever does is sit on the couch or wheel into/out of a room and sometimes a super hella quick bedroom scene. No transfers no flashbacks to when he was walking, nothing crazy. Why could this not have been cast to an actual para??? Then maybe at least they could show some legitimate transfers 🤦🏻♀️

not sure if this will help, but I know there is a non-profit called RespectAbility. Part of their mission is to get more people with disabilities on the big and small screen. I also know Kurt Yeager, an amputee actor is part of a group that tries to help actors with disabilities get more representation.

I know this is a long shot but does anybody have an interest in writing screenplays. Over the last couple of years I have done a number of courses on the subject, including some regarding Netflix. There are a number of talented writers on here, I was just curious if anybody thought about writing a script.

It looks like we are finally making progress, with companies like Netflix making commitments to be more inclusive and specifically listing disability as a target. Pre-Netlfix I've seen a noticeable and substantial change in commercials for about a year now. I regularly see people with disabilities, though the majority have been those damn barely-disabled amps.

I wish all this inclusivity was around when I was first injured back in 97. I totally would have tried to do modeling.

The other day I watched the new Netflix movie, I Care a Lot. Peter Dinklage is in it. His disability is completely irrelevant, he's just a dude, and a powerful character at that. He's had a long acting career, but GoT was really good breakout role, and that was a part explicitly designed for someone with his specific disablity. Now he's made it to the big leagues, and he's getting parts that have absolutely nothing to do with his short stature. Isn't that the arc of successful representation? He went from unknown, to featured because of his disablity, to now being featured in his own right with no regards to his disablity. Love it. Go watch the movie.

Have any of you seen the show Sex Education on Netflix? They actually have a character who is played by a real life quad. He is colorful and funny, and his story line has absolutely NOTHING to do with his disability. He was great, and I sure would love to see more of him in the future. It's encouraging to see a regular character being played by a PWD rather than a disabled character being played by an AB.

As much as I am really sick of "coming of age" stuff, that was a really cute show and I of course really appreciated that they had that character.
