And so the electricity between them continued the whole day, making it difficult for Lena to remember instructions and putting faces and names together. While Miles took longer than he normally would in solving a database query the company was contracted to fix for the ambulance service (this is how he got the job, because he was formerly an EMT).
Finally the end of the working has come, much to Lena's relief...but little did she know that it wasn't over yet.
"Would you like to grab some coffee?" Miles asked as he wheeled himself to her workstation.
"Uhm..." 'Why the hell can't I say something???' Lena thinks to herself while giving herself and imaginary kick in the butt.
"C'mon, it'll be good to get out of here, talk about stuff other than DBAs and queries, etc...Besides, I'm in need of a grande frappucino"
"As long as there's mint flavouring in it" She immediately replied.
Grabbing both their bags, they made their way down the building and into the Starbuck's 3 buildings down. Lena had never walked with a guy in a wheelchair before, and something about it was making her giddy inside. She wondered how it would feel to push his wheelchair and bend down to him when he says something sweet in her ears, wondered how they would kiss in public...."After you..." she suddenly heard him say, and the all too familiar rush of blood to her face was happening for the nth time that day.
Lena grabbed both fraps while Miles led the way to a corner table, away from the bustling five o'clock crowd that had gathered in the cafe. Amidst stories of first-day-on-the-job bloopers, funny anecdotes about the office, Lena finally felt herself relax. And it wasn't an easy task getting her relaxed. Letting herself laugh out loud, throwing her head back...this was the best side of Lena Miles has seen the whole day. And he found himself wanting to reach out to her soft hair and pulling her close ... "You alright?" she asked, interrupting his thoughts...It was his turn to blush.
"We better get going" he says.
"Oh, ok" Lena replies. "Don't worry about me, I live a couple of blocks away and it's such a lovely afternoon, I think I'll take my time walking home"
'I don't think I can let this chance pass me by' Miles thought, and while his mind was racing, offered to walk her home..."After all, like you said, it is a beautiful day".
The walk, like the conversations, was easy with Miles. Even the quiet moments. It was as if he wasn't expecting anything. 'Should I invite him up?' 'What if he needs to use the toilet? Is my toilet big enough?' 'Can he wheel around my place easily?' Suddenly, Lena was thinking about all these things. She certainly never thought that she'd meet a disabled guy and so why would she arrange her home to accommodate one? She suddenly started to panic again...
They almost missed her apartment building as these thoughts started crossing Lena's mind. "Would you like to come in?" She blurted before she had a chance to think. "I'd like to..." Miles said with a big smile.
Then she could have kicked herself again as she totally forgot that there were 5 steps going up the apartment building, and because it was no Ritz, there was no bellboy to help him up. Taking stock of the situation and seeing Lena get flusterred again, Miles deftly lifted his legs off the footrests, onto the ground and pushed himself slowly off the chair and onto the third step. As he tried to reach for his wheelchair, Lena pulled it up the steps and set it where Miles might be needing it. "Thanks" he said, looking up to Lena. "No worries" she said looking down into his gray eyes. And as he pulled himself up the next two steps, and up his wheelchair, Lena was feeling the throbbing of her heart and something else somewhere in her pelvis.
