Completely random question, but does anybody have an idea why the site is called paradevo?
I have looked in the history and could find people thinking that the para stands for well para. I actually thought it was the spanish para Devo, as in “for Devo”.
Anybody a real answer or other theories?

Lee came up with the name because he is a devotee of paraplegics. He created the website first way back when you needed actual coding skills to put up a site. For a few years it was just a website with some content created sporadically by me and some fiction by Lee and other devs. Lee added a guest book and people starting chatting there, obviously desperate to make connections with other devs. So then Lee added a message board to the website because people wanted to talk. Not a lot of thought went into the name Paradevo, and in retrospect I would have chosen something else because it has caused SCI devs to be over-represented here, and devs of other disabilities have hesitated to join.

Lee and I met in a Yahoo egroup for devs around 1999, and we were both really frustrated with the gross behavior of the male devs in that group. I had tried to form websites with some other dev women but it hadn't worked out and I don't know how to code. I kept pestering Lee to make a website and he finally did in 2000. I generated most of the content, which was the FAQ about devs that is still up, reviews of movies and books I liked, and devvy fan fiction. The website was updated sporadically for a few years, but the fiction section was the most active. Lee started the message board in 2005.

I saw a lot of people saying that Para didn’t mean exclusively paraplegics, so always wondered. Also read your diary’s and since you aren’t primarily a SCI dev, I always assumed it would be something else.

You're welcome! Thanks for reading Devo Diary.
Lee chose the name Paradevo on his own. I might have chosen something else but it's not like I had any better ideas.

So it doesn't have anything to do with 70s/80s New Wave band Devo then?
