one day you are fine and dandy and BOOM!! Wake up injured and everything changes instantly. A lot of problems is financial problems. I've learned going on disability, due to paralysis from the shoulders down at a young age pretty much makes you poor. have you seriously looked up what a vehicle costs? It's ridiculous. Then, the common transportation companies that will pick you up and bring you places is strictly Dr. appointments for insurance to help out. Of course, everyone's area and situation is different... I know that. But, going anywhere else other than doctors appointments you have to figure it out yourself. I don't know maybe I'm just ranting here.

This are some things I've heard about pwd for a long while of being a dev and it's infuriating to not see progress in stuff like this.

You are right, it isn't fair, we have a pretty cool local disability advocate that always points out she has to pay the "disability fee" on everything she does. She has a job, is my age and based on education and job to my estimation makes a decent income and would have been financially fine if it wasn't for her disability. Even if all disability related costs are covered, never being able to pick the cheap option makes live more expensive.

I call it the disability tax. I even went so far as to write an entire post about on my blog.

I hear you. People in the European social democracies have a much higher standard of living due to social insurance programs that cover most things from medical care, to to care giving to a stipend of sexual surrogacy. I am comfortably retired on Medicare, the only fear I have is extensive illness that requires expensive pharma-like cancer-or 24 hour nursing which I am aware many require at present. My thought is being disabled is tough anywhere, and tougher in America. Cheers!

I just had to spend $450 on a new adaptive mouse. Can't dispute the existence of the Disability Tax

Social security is basically minimum wage, and while a lot if not all of medical expenses are covered there are plenty of examples of people falling through the cracks or simply having to pay “the disability tax”. While already living on the bare minimum. Besides (at least in the Netherlands) almost everything is paid for on a sliding scale, which means making more money will not immediately result in more money in your pocket.
