So here's my problem...
Those of you who know me know that I have been into wheelie guys for as long as I can remember.
Last month I was diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome which is a temporary condition that causes numbness, weakness and temporary paralysis. For a couple of weeks I was to some extent an incomplete quad.
Now, having had an brief insight as to how shit this situation is for you guys I feel guilty as hell about finding it attractive in others.
I am on the mend now, but a guy came onto the ward yesterday who is a wheeler. I think he's really hot, but feel REALLY bad about thinking so.
Are my dev days over or will I come to terms with it?

Wow, that's a turn of events. I am sorry to hear you got GB, but glad you are on the mend. So, does your having to go through this change your entire perspective, or is it ok to still find wheelers hot?

I suppose it comes down to one question- would changing your attraction to wheelers make their life any better, less difficult or more positive?
I have asked myself that question and have come to the conclusion that my attraction does nothing to make anyone's life better or worse.
Glad you are better.

robbb,
Turn the tables around. If your GB was permanent, would you be happier with a world that included people who found you attractive as a disabled person, or did not include such people?
Imagine how isolating it would be if nobody found you attractive because of your disability. Finding a disabled person attractive, and wishing disability onto them are totally unrelated concepts.
faith, I agree with ray, life is better when someone finds you attractive, and the source of the attraction isn't very important.
In a sustained relationship, the things we are attracted to in our S/O are generally broad and dynamic, the initial attractors are simply that - initial attractors, not singular entities that will in & of themselves sustain a meaningful relationship. That said, it still feels good to think someone finds you attractive.

Well Rob, obviously it's God getting you back!!!! Ok, JUST KIDDING...NO HATE MAIL.
Actually, I kinda wish everyone got to experience being paralyzed for short period. Talk about life lessons to be learned, and it doesn't have to be permanent!! Even at that it would only scratch the surface, but I believe the experience might really be used as a positive teachable moment.

hey robb. nice to see you again and happy to hear you are recovering ok.
i think we have all felt the way you do from time to time, even without the extra jolt of insight you've had. i really like faith's take on the guilt thing and it sums up the conclusion i've come to myself although i have to remind myself from time to time.
i think your recent experience will only serve to further your understanding and empathy with the guys you meet in the future which surely must be a good thing.

Thanks for your replies (and kind wishes) guys, some really interesting input and thoughts. I am feeling a lot clearer about things now. I don't think my dev days are over, as apart from anything else you can't help waht you feel. The hot wheeler was discharged yesterday. He was a really nice guy, unfortuntely his wife was really nice too Things continue to improve for me and I hope to be discharged tomorrow. Thanks again.
