I know!
This is a "Zombie Thread"!
But, since the first time I read it, in the day after my arrival here, I had the urge to translate fully the nearly seven and a half minutes of video.
The older members here, you know of my insecurity about my limited knowledge of English but I finally decided to do something really useful for you who always welcomed me (or almost always)
"Sex is also about fantasy, and lots of it!
And for anyone, wheeler or not.
Of course it is not easy to talk about it and it is often taboo.
Within this universe of desires, we find the devoteism.
Have you ever heard of that?
Devotees are people who are attracted to PwD.
Fetish? A fantasy like any other? Does not matter. It's all a matter of choice.
Reporter: If you think about how many people there are in the world, it is easy to reach the conclusion that there are many different opinions and tastes.
When it comes to sex, we also realise that there are no limits. This is where that fits a group of people who have a desire little spoken and very controversial: the attraction for PwD.
This practice is called devoteism and doesn’t depend on sexual orientation. They call themselves devotees and are attracted to unconventional accessories like this cane or a wheelchair.
In Brazil, it is still almost unknown and is on the Internet where discussions take place.
Virtual message boards, chat rooms, blogs. The virtual places are sought to satisfy the curiosity, ask questions and even dating.
The theme seems to be new, but in Films Industry, several movies have already spoken on the subject: 'Boxing Helena', 'Crash', "Crime Delicado," a Brazilian movie whose title can be translated as "Delicate Crime", "Skin" (A Pele), a Portuguese movie, "Devotee", a very specific movie on the subject and Quid Pro Quo.
Carlena Weber, discovered devoteism when she was already five years riding a wheelchair. She had her first experience with a devotee who met on the Internet two years ago and it states that in social networks, there are all kinds of manifestation, including the prejudice of the PwD themselves, that are against these kind of relationships.
Carlena Weber: Usually on FB I get messages like: "Do not add X or Y because he is a devotee" speaking of the devotees as if they were part of a marginalized class but I do not see it that way. I think you can add the devotee as a friend and it' s your choice, then you talk to him, find out if he's an interesting guy, a nice guy, if you are willing to try, you try, but if you do not willing to try. just don't do it! Unfortunately, my wheeler friends in general are very prejudiced with regard to this matter.
She continues: "I think if you meet only devotees, maybe someone can say that there is a problem but if you are a woman who has an open mind and has relationships with both devotees and with guys who are not devotees that's okay!
Sexologist says that the term "devoteism" is not recognized by Science and reflects on the creation of labels:
Jaqueline Brendler:. "The Human Being is multifaceted, able to be attracted perhaps by a 6ft blonde or a redhead, who are not the common standards in most of Brazil If we consider the devotees are people who don't share the attraction to the common standard, but only for the exceptions... If you are putting labels on all the people who get excited by PwD or other people out of the standards, you know? All people who feels attraction for minorities would be labeled too."
I do believe it is a label that excludes even because I'm sure that most people should not think that AB men are attracted to women with disabilities couldn't be considered normal. But it is also strongly linked to the history of the PwD.
Until very recently, we didn't have jobs, we didn't have access to school, so if you like people who have long been excluded, everyone ends up seeing it as if it were something from another planet, which is not normal!
The world we live in nowadays, is based on standards. Celebrities from around the world, dictate the current standards of symmetry and raise a controversial issue related to devoteism: The devotees would be taking advantage of the vulnerability of PwD?
Listen to the opinion of a devotee:
When you use the body of a PwD only as a source of pleasure, it's as if you were sullying the person, you know? it's as if the body of the disabled were there and in the process it failed to give you pleasure and passed to give you only pity. (She's talking about the feelings of non-devotees about devoteism) and continuing... But this is a great nonsense because it's obvious that we do not neglect the difficulties of life of people with real hard times on mobility and adaptation issues. But that does not mean that the PwD has no pleasure and do not want to have pleasure and give pleasure to another person.
Carlena has many virtual friends who call themselves devotees. We try to talk to one of them.
"Now, we entered my MSN and I have a friend who is devotee. He lives in Portugal and I asked him to talk to us about devoteism. And he agreed!
I asked him if he considers the devoteism a disease, a fixation.
He said that most of the devotees yes, are fixed only in the disability / disease. But he, on the other hand, feels admiration for these people, perhaps because he has a childhood friend who became quad, in addition, he feels very angry when the PwD are handled as "poor things" or in a different way for AB people!
This is a contentious issue, and for sure will still be much discussed. Sexuality of PwD does exist and the attraction for them too! What needs to exist is always the respect and satisfaction with the affective life.
It will only there is a call for help when there is suffering, when that people are discriminated by their personal tastes. If the person need the help of a therapist to deal with discrimination against the couple and move forward with this relationship, with any person she / he has chosen, they will be welcome in any Psicology Practice. But in an ideal world, would be that one where society does not discriminate. Society must let the sexuality of the people by themselves, as a private issue!"
