It's been a while since I've started a new thread I had to figure out how to do it again.
Last week my wife and I went on our annual ski trip to Steamboat. The snow was the worse we have ever seen it there. That is just the nature of the ski season this year for anyone who keeps up with that.
Because my wife is a dev, I tend to be a little more aware of dev and disabled interactions. I really enjoy this ski camp because of all the sit skiers that I get to "compare notes" with. Whether it is just seeing how well they ski to how they transfer into their buckets or simply rolling around Gondola square. It's also really interesting seeing all the other disabilities and seeing what people are and aren't capable of.
We had about 11 sit skiers, mostly paras. Had the biggest group of women skiers that I've seen in the three years I've been there. I think there were three female sit skiers and three single leg amputee skiers. Two blind vets, one skied and the other snowboarded. It was the first time ever for the snowboarder and from what little I saw of him on the slopes he was pretty impressive.
My wife was a little upset that there weren't more wives, she likes to guess whether or not they might be a dev or not. Then she fluctuates to feeling sad for all the other devs that can't find their partner when we're surrounded by so many single disabled people.
I also saw another dynamic in this year's group that I haven't seen in the past, and that was a lot more disabled hooking up with other disabled people in the group.
I know I've mentioned in the past what a great opportunity I think disabled sports camps make for devs to get inside the disabled community versus just finding a random wheeler roaming around town. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but if it's available I think it is something worth looking into.
