Welcome to the board. There has been a lot of talk about the Paralympics on here in London at the end of August.Have you noticed any changes in China for disabled people since then, even if you don't see many out & about.Did you go the Paralympics when it was in China? What did you think to it?

Hello, my name is Jianing. I am a 22 years old girl from China. I always think I'm weird because I like people with disabilities. Today, I was online and I see this message board. It makes me feel good that there are people the same as me. There is a website in Chinese like this, but people just post photos of other people on it. I really don't like it. And most of the photos on the website are about disabled girls. I want to make some friends here. Sorry for my bad English. Hi Jianing, a warm welcome from the UK!

I didn't go and see the Olympics or the Paralympics in Beijing four years ago. In my city people don't talk about paralympics. People don't talk about disabled sports. I know China have the paralympic sportsmen, but I don't know about them.

Hi Dee Dee. Not a lot. I seldom see a man with crutches on the road. But man in wheelchairs, not a lot. I think disability is a big thing here in China. If a disabled person goes to university, he will then be on the news, because it happens rarely. Thanks for explaining Jianing. I had a feeling that would be the case. It is a shame. Do you know how many people in China live with a spinal cord injury? Dee Dee, I don't know. But I don't think there are a lot of people have spial cord injury.

I was the only one from outside of china, none of them spoke any english so conversation was "very" limited, but i can tell that they exist...

They are there, as Sittingbull points out, but they are not seen in everyday life, as Jianing points out. So, does this come down to accessibility or the general view on disabled people in China? Or both?

Interesting discussion developing about the visibility of wheelers. Is it something thats specific to China or Asia.I don't think so to a certain degree. After reading this thread today,I was reminded of how many times Devs have lamented the fact that they don't see any wheelers locally on here (several from America). The facilities for getting out & about will be more developed in some countires ,for sure, but that's not the whole story.I would say that they are there ,but it helps if you are living in the right district.

I'm hoping to go to China next year(I've been studying Mandarin for a long time) and am very interested in the level of accessibility there. Seoul was much more accessible than NYC and it was pretty interesting to see. However while I was there a story of what the allowance was for someone with a disability was a topic of discussion because it basically covered leaving ones house a maximum of twice a year... Which is so sad, especially because there were lovely working elevators and escalators and the sort in working condition everywhere! Not getting much use... Which is the exact opposite in NY, where our subways have elevators that work 14% of the time. -_-
