I heard that in US the word "Nerd" has a derogatory meaning and Geek would be more polite, is that true?
Here in Brazil they are related, a Nerd is a person who enjoy subjects/activities that most adults don't, like video games, comics, animation, RPG, board games, fantasy and sci-fi novels etc. While a Geek is a person who really enjoys technology, usually IT workers or enthusiasts.
Here we use to say that every Geek is a Nerd, but not every Nerd is a Geek.
I only wrote all this so that nobody thinks the "Nerd" in the question is derogatory. I consider myself a big Nerd, but not a Geek.

Yes yes, right here! *jumping up and down and waving hands* I'm a huge nerd ;D Here in Europe the word "nerd" has a negative connotation as well (at least for most people). It's probably because people tend to have this image of the stereotypical unwashed, socially inept guy who stays in his apartment all day, lol. It's just prejudice. So most people who don't know me that well are shocked when they hear how much I love video games, technology, SciFi and all that stuff, because I don't fit into their usual nerd-box So, what are some of your favorite games?

According to this diagram: I'd be a geek. I don't see myself too socially inept :} However, I don't mind calling myself a nerd. More info

So, what are some of your favorite games? I LOVE The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, in which I have more than 70 hours of playtime, I also like Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect 2 (not so much the first and third MEs). Nowadays I'm playing the first Darksiders, I'm enjoying but I think I will enjoy the second more, because I really love open-world non-linear games. I also play the tabletop RPGs Dungeons and Dragons (3.5, 4th e Essentials) and The New World of Darkness line, specially Changeling.

As long as I don't become a 'Revenge of the Nerds-nerd, I'm okay with being nerdish. 80% Geek + 20% Nerd, I can live with

I'm a total geek too! Star Wars is my particular poison. But I do love my PS3 even though I don't play that much, but I have written a Masters thesis about computer/video games. I think that also qualifies ;-)

In the US "nerd" has become sorta cool. There are "I love nerds" t-shirts, people wear nerd looking glasses and say they are nerds or geeks because the want to be unique. You can't "fake" being a nerd! Its not got that bad a connotation in the US anymore. I think dork is the least preferred word.

I've seen people argue and argue about what the difference is between all these terms, but everyone seems to use them differently. I call myself a geek. But I'm not very technical (I do work with a bunch of engineers). I am socially awkward, love Star Trek and Babylon 5, play RPGs, PC games, and modern board games. I guess that makes me more of a nerd by your definition. My friends call me a geek, though. As far as the diagram goes, nerd for sure! I absolutely obsess over things.

lol I think based on that chart, I'd be a nerd.... although probably a geek when it comes to writing/books
I used to be a really big gamer but lately I've been focusing a lot more on my reading/writing than video games.
