Doing research on starting a class action lawsuit against automakers/dealerships that void warranties for the installation of hand controls. Who wants in?

Wait, that actually happens? Anything you add to a vehicle after-market can affect the warranty: lift-kits, special shocks, entertainment systems, radios, you name it. The list goes on and on... and includes, of course, hand-controls. I don't know if a class-action suit would even be supported, because it opens the door for all kinds of warranty issues and other lawsuits. Have you looked into dealer-installed controls?

VA won't cover it if it's dealer installed.. ADA has to protect us in that way. I shouldn't get a different warranty just because i need different equipment to operate a vehicle. It doesn't change the entire framework of the vehicle. We aren't talking about free spinners, neon lights, lifting, lowering... this is so that I CAN OPERATE the vehicle.. Not a lift so I can be a passenger. This will allow me to safely and effectively operate the vehicle. I have a feeling that I do have a leg to stand on (so to speak). That's like charging more for the ADA room at a hotel because (technically) you get more room (also illegal). I could keep going. I would like to hear from actual para's if they have any experience with this.

That blows. My friends and I go through hoops not to void our warranty cause we tune our cars, lower them, and do all that flashy stuff but I wouldn't think something that was essential such as hand controls would be an issue.

Honda lets you keep the warranty.
I think the lawsuit might have some legs for the portions of the vehicle unaffected by the mod.
Out here in California, we actually have to pay our registration fee based on the full value, including mods. If I had time I would lobby to get rid of that stupid rule, it penalizes us for having the mods.

If it's really an issue, go after the VA for not paying for a dealer-install rather than the car companies, it'll probably be an easier road than going after a bunch of different companies. Unless you're actually installing the blinker switches, etc in the hand-control system and changing the wiring, they shouldn't void the warranty anyway no matter who does the work. My SO has either put in hand controls himself or had an accessible equipment dealer (never the dealership themsevles) do it many, many times and has NEVER had the dealership void his warranty. Technically, changing the oil at 5000 miles rather than 2500 should void the warranty where I live, but I've never had the dealership give me any grief with warranty repairs. I don't know how ramps and all that work, but hand controls themselves shouldn't void your warranty. Only problem we've ever had was a dealer mechanic wrecking a truck trying to drive it with the hand controls.

My husband had a warranty repair done on his car several years after he bought it and it had hand controls installed. Maybe Ford doesn't void the warranty. Oh and his hand controls were not installed by the dealer but they did have a program through Ford that helped pay for the install.

Hand controls shouldn't void anyone's warranty. It's the dropped floor, ramps, etc. where I can see the mfr's having an argument that they shouldn't have to repair stuff that was modified by another company. But that still leaves the unmodified stuff.......

Appreciate the relevant input. Going forward and going to buy a vehicle from a car comp that won't void the warranty... and go after the ones that said they would.

I dont know where you are getting this info but hand controls do not void warranty. I work for a mobility company and ive sold hundreds of sets of hand controls and this has never been a problem. The reason it doesn't void the warranty is because hand controls are not a permanently mounted. Nothing OEM is modified other then a small hole that sometimes has to be drilled into the dash for the rod to come out. That dealership doesn't know wtf they are talking about because they haven't been educated.
Why is everyone so sue happy now days? A lot of you crippled fucks give the rest of us a bad name because you are sue happy. Stop looking for a paycheck and educate people. You will help the disability community better that way.

"Crippled Fucks" Feel sorry for you. I don't know what stick you have up your ass, how small of a pecker you may have, or whatever insecurities you have going on that made you react the way you did. Believe me ass clown... if anything I am definitely giving us "cripples" a good name. Usually when people react the way they do it's because they have some of their own demons they are wrestling with. Not feeling good enough as a "cripple". Too many of "us" giving you a bad name? I'm not looking for a pay out ass clown. I am looking for information and a legal means to make them do the right thing. Thanks for the laugh though.... LOL.

Well, I have to admit that I'm pretty sure it's past sue happy crippled fucks... and the demonstration prone ones that got the ADA both enacted and marginally enforced. So, personally, I feel like it has it's place, after other methods of action have been explored and/or acted on.
(Impressions received from talking to really old, pre-ADA crippled, crippled fucks. Lol)
Also, HOW did you know it would cone to this, AA? Lol
