Read an article today that initially the character of "House" was going to be a wheeler. Sigh...
In the meantime - anyone read any good books lately with wheelers in them?

What?? Aarrgh, that would have been so wonderful. Probably they decided a wheeler as the main character would be too much...um...disability for a popular show Good dev books? Another big problem. There are none. At least I haven't found anything yet that isn't awfully fluffy and totally unrealistic. If anybody can recommend something GOOD: I guess the major part of us will be very thankful!

My idea of dev fiction is "Lady Chatterly's Lover" where Clifford is able-bodied and Mellors (the lover) is the wheeler. Anything else just reads like pure poop.

Friday Night Lights has a pretty good story line about an injured QB who is a quad. Pretty realistic issues the show deals with and the guy who is his mentor is very good.

Hmm...that would've only made the character 1000000% more kick-ass than he already is...but for some reason, I can't picture Hugh Lurie rolling around in a wheelchair...doesn't seem natural.
Haven't read 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', but it's supposed to be one of those books that everyone has to read once in a lifetime.
Oh yeah...there was X-Men, not quite a book...oh okay, just nevermind then.

Patrick Stewart's Xman w/c something of a disappointment. And I can picture Hugh Laurie rolling around in one - apparently he could, too, because when he auditioned for the part, House was a wheeler.
I've never understood the "muscle death" business in his thigh. How can he walk with just a cane?

Producers/writers don't care too much about realistic medical details. Apart from their "visible" disability, disabled characters mostly can do everything. No complications, no real limitations in their everyday life. Well ok, House has his pain meds addiction. About Friday Night Lights: Doesn't work for me, for the simple reason that it's about teenagers. A seventeen year old isn't a man in my eyes, and I've always been into grown-ups... Sigh, why can't we have back good old Logan Cale.

Or Joe in "Highlander"? Or Kevin in "Joan of Arcadia"? ... And didn't Logan get miraculously cured somewhere along the way, too?

Yeah, he got cured twice, though the first time it wasn't permanent, which made all the devs very happy. Season 2 doesn't count anyway. Kevin of Joan is not enough man for my taste, too. But I never saw that Joe guy. Is he worth a look? Anyway, nothing's gonna change my mind: Logan Cale was perfect. If I ever meet his clone I'll have to say goodbye to b/f.

Or Kevin in "Joan of Arcadia"? Kevin looked FAKE. Muscled legs, clearly a walker, held his legs unnaturally for a para, no attempt to make him appear remotely paralyzed except having him sit in a wheelchair and wheel around like a part-time wheeler. Lack of ease and grace with his chair, etc. Didn't do it for me. Big disappointment.
