Yup, I hate it too b4i, even after several cups of coffee. I always think it has a desperate, fanatical or needy sound to it and I'm none of those. Am I? I said am I?! Hello, is anyone there, is anybody listening to me?! HELLO?!! ANSWER ME WHEELER GODS. RIGHT NOW!!!! It's ok Inky, maybe we can find a desperate, needy wheeler to send your way! It will be a match in needy, I mean PD heaven! You're right, the connotation does not fit here, not for devs or PWD's. We all know the truth though.

I totally agree. The word "Devotee" has negative connotations attached to it. I do like the word "Dev" though.
No one apart from the people on this board know what it means. We can keep it that way. Information on what the word means will be shared on a need to know basis.
If you know...you know...ya know! Something like that.

Hm. I don't think it has any negative connotation. To me, it just implies a particular level of passion no matter the context. When used here, it's a positive identification and I think that's great. Shout it from the rooftops, ect.
I think our culture is a bit uneasy with passion at the moment; we should be cool, detached, efficient. I'm not a big fan of that view.

Ok, on a serious note (even though my coffee has Baileys in it at the moment- no joke), I prefer the name dev as well. Devotee doesn't come across bad to me, just one sided. However, that's kinda what this is place is all about right? Feelings we have for others, not the other way around or nothing necessarily mutual. But if you're going to shout it from the rooftops my personal preference would be 'dev' if I had a choice.

This may be old news for many of you but a I recently came across the term dev being used to refer to a web or program developer. It made me do a bit of a double take but also made me like the term a bit more because its kinda mainstream now. I could use the term dev in a conversation with my husband and if someone overheard it they wouldn't think anything of it.

I've probably said this word out loud 5 times ever, I HATE IT!!! I recently told one of my "wheeler" friends that I'm a "dev" and he said "I figured you went that way" LOL but he says him and his rugby friends call them chair chasers. I like that A LOT more.

"Chair chaser" would only refer to one type of dev, though. I like "dev" for both its tech connotations and its link to "deviant," which makes sense. Devotee, though... yuck. It makes the whole thing sound a lot more fetishistic than necessary.

I also seriously dislike Devotee as it has so many different connotations... most of them negatively skewed. If I label myself I say Dev.

I've never heard the term Devo, but I definitely DON'T like it either. Another negative of devotee? It doesn't role off the tongue very well. (No crudeness intended-lol). Dev seems much more natural to throw into a conversation.

I don't care for labeling myself a devotee. At all. I don't have a problem with being who I am, and I no longer feel like it is or should be a huge secret, but if I were explaining myself to someone who wasn't already familiar with the term I wouldn't use it. I think it's much simpler to just say "this is what I like" and let that be the end of it.
I have told a very few people in real life that I am a dev and I didn't use the word devotee. Granted, I didn't know the word at the time, so that's why I didn't use it, but I certainly know it now and still wouldn't. I wish there was another word, but I'm not sure what else I'd rather call myself tbh.
These are just my initial thoughts after two cups of coffee and a hefty dose of cold medicine so I may respond differently later lol
