You people got me on a Manson kick, which resulted in a very fun tumble down the rabbit hole. That lead to watching NIN live at Woodstock in '94, with Twiggy Ramirez (of Manson) up on stage. And that lead to wanting to look up Reptile, my old favorite NIN song, and then.... Suddenly Peter Murphy singing it with Trent and Twiggy??
I'm ok with this.
Edit: further research shows Peter Murphy and Trent Reznor did a bunch of stuff together, somehow I missed that entirely. Neat.

It was only a decade ago that Sherwin Sleeves established his talent for songwriting; his fandom of and participation in “The Ron & Fez Show” leading to a request by the program’s host for a new compositional tribute to Christmas. Sleeves struggled for a time to find the right chords -- a novel melody to serve as the framework for his holiday opus -- and it was ultimately by accident that he conceived the foundation for his “Christmas La La Song.” Upon its completion, the song would be afforded airtime by Ron Bennington and again by Gregg “Opie” Hughes of “The Opie & Anthony Show,” a linchpin of the unabashed, unfettered shock-jockery Sirius at the time offered its listeners. Opie loved the song while Anthony hated it; the two would renew their disagreement each Christmastime up until the show’s sudden cancelation in 2014. But Sleeves and his song have persisted, tenacious and with the utmost fixity of purpose, to offer merriment and meaning to any who would listen. Happy holidays, y’all.

Oh Nate , that’s wonderful! The guy looks a bit like Santa Claus in the video. Good choice! ;-) And his voice reminds me of the much loved Paolo Conte: Edit: oh, I just noticed that it might also have been the head wear, the text or even the title of the song that somehow gave me the idea it might have something to do with Christmas...

Well Nate, I can't decide if I agree with Opie or Anthony. I am reminded of Frank, from Shameless, if he had any soul left in him. Or Frank from It's Always Sunny, maybe. An old man with greasy whiskers, running on half a liver and double his tolerance of cheap whiskey, slowly wandering down a city street and feeling the closest thing to wholesome that a lifetime of maladjustment will allow. There's a 5-lane road here on the edge town that runs perfectly straight for about 10 miles. I say "edge of town" but really it's the border between this city proper and the much poorer neighboring city. It's lined with used car dealerships that advertise in-house financing, food trucks, hourly motels, convenience stores with barred windows, and clusters of homeless camps. I know a guy who claims he's made thousands by walking up and down the sidewalks, picking up gold jewelry that hookers have torn out of each other in fights. That's probably a tall tale; I've seen a ton of hookers along there, but never seen a hooker fight. A few years ago I found myself tramping down the sidewalk on this lovely boulevard after a fresh snow. It was late and nobody was around. There was a motel across the street from a taco house, both quiet but lit up through the night. The motel had these garish round incandescent bulbs lining its huge sign, like you'd expect to see in an old circus. You know, the kind with scary clowns and a tic-tac-toe playing chicken. The taco house had a low stucco wall surrounding an outdoor seating area, snow piled on top of the chairs which had themselves been stacked on top of the tables. The wall was punctuated every few feet with light posts dressed up like lanterns. Red, then green, then red, then green. It was strangely gorgeous, the red and green reflecting off of the snow every which-way, blending in with the warm white from the motel from across the street. That's what this song sounds like to me, a snapshot of something that could be construed as nice, in a place littered with empty Dorito bags and cigarette butts.

The whole internet is compiling lists and journals of their year (and decade!) in retrospect. I'm tempted to do a post later about favorite shows of the decade, but for now I'm just going to talk about one thing.
In 2019 I finally saw one of my favorite acts live. Sunn O))) toured for the new works they released this year. The last good album they put out was 2009's Monoliths and Dimensions, which was gorgeous. This new material, while pretty different from previous releases, was really enjoyable. They've gone from bleak and empty, to creepy and morbid, and now to vibrant and powerful. I went to this show alone and embedded myself in the crowd only a few feet from stage (funny enough, almost exactly where I stood to witness Swans on their best [imho] tour ever.) Sunn O))) is known for just being stupid loud. It's slow, theatrical, it pries your soul from your body and pushes you into the void like a force of nature. The crowd was completely motionless as the hooded figures on stage came in and out of view, conjuring rolling waves of sound that were almost more physical than auditory. At the end, after a wonderful encore, they made eye contact and bowed to each one of us while we thundered and clapped. Their guest musician, Steve Albini, was hugging Greg Anderson and crying. Stephen O'Mally and I locked eyes for sustained seconds, and I could have been struck down at that moment and been perfectly fine with it.
Sunn O))) is one of those things that's... hard to describe. I didn't get it for a long time. I tried a couple tracks and got bored. It just seemed like the most pretentious, goofy bullshit... And I mean, that's not really wrong. On the one hand it's silly, but on the other hand it's incredible. For me, one day, it finally just clicked. I was at an old job, alone in a huge lab with tile floors and lined with racking full of glassware. Every beaker started vibrating and it was like the room was coming down... and I think I just about ascended.
Because I'm already fully aware nobody is going to watch either of these videos, I'll include a review for the new album by the man I intend to marry. When we tie the knot, I'll make sure to get him to discard that unfortunate mustache. Anyway, Fantano describes it as "ritualistically performed modal drones" which is just the best four words I have ever heard strung together.
