That reminds me, I really hope we can renovate our office soon. My Mom runs a law firm, and we're hoping to make it accessible. The building is pretty old, and even though it was a mediclinic, it's not really very accessible. It's all on one floor, but we have a narrow doorway with a sill and the bathroom is not really accessible at all. (Speaking of that, wheelers, what all does a bathroom need to be accessible? I know ours needs to be bigger and have grab bars and a toilet that doesn't wobble when you sit on it, but I'm not sure where the bars need to be, or if there's anything else we'd need to change.) www.wheelchairaccessdesign.com/uploads/2/8/6/4/28647399/7536942_orig.jpgthis can help

Hi Everyone-So the accessible house is up for sale finally. Living in Southern California - the price is at $949,000.00. It is going for about $150,000.00 more than houses in our neighborhood (Is that the price for accessibility)? It is gorgeous -has wide doorways, lots of room, ramps, bathrooms/bedrooms that would accommodate lifts etc... Kind of sad though... nobody that needs accommodations for mobility has looked at it... . Pictures I took might not really give the entire picture - just know that it is an amazing house! I hope someone and their family can enjoy the ease of this beautiful house.

That shower doesn’t look like it’s a roll in. I wonder why they made it accessible but overlooked that.
I think lots of people who are getting older are looking to purchase something that will work for them into old age so maybe that’s what the builders are shooting for.
I’m curious, where in so cal is the house?

Emma, showers are all roll-ins with extra wide double doors that swing out flat. Owner grew up in that house when it was non accessible to her dad who used a wheelchair. This was a heart project for her!

I always find accessible housing floor plans super interesting to look at (hello dev brain!), so thanks for sharing. It is a really beautiful looking house too, even if the price tag makes me cringe. Even around where I live in New England, I don't know how I'm ever going to afford a house. They're so expensive around where I currently am.

This was a heart project for her! Heart... And wallet! Although to be fair I'm sure it cost her quite a bit for renovation. Accessibility definitely costs.

My city like 15 years ago had a government sponsored campaign to diversify housing...low interest loans and HUD assistance if necessary...

@southerncalgal, did you take all these pictures yourself? Those first few are pretty tiny, did you take any others? Someday I'd like to build my own house, and it would be so cool to work in accessibility while maintaining a cool modern design.

sungod - here are some bigger pictures... Hope that helps!! Ramps for front and side doors - deck has ramp for both sides. All showers are roll-in. Kitchen island has a pull out so that a there is a counter for wheelchair height. Also, spacing in kitchen is to accommodate a wheelchair. For $950,000 - this can be yours ! I know...ridiculous price!!! Hoping a wheeler moves into the house - Shame on me for my DEV thoughts !!!!

Can we all invest in a giant accessible commune and just live an accessible life. It's soooooo hard to freaking find accessible apartments in Seattle. Everything is hilly. We got lucky with our current unit but home prices are exploding I just want to develop an accessible multifamily and invite all my friends and we can have a giant orgy once a month or so. And a cookout.
No but really it's ridiculous some of the stupid designs they come up and then try to sell as accessible too. We went to a hotel recently and the shower bench was stainless steel so any soap during your shower and you'll slip right off. Genius design. (It did look cool but it's definitely a hazard)
