Hi All I’m an ex Paralympic athlete and now coach I wondered how many Devs attend wheelchair competitions, They are seeing people who push their body’s to the max and compete at the highest level We have the World wheelchair rugby championships in Sydney In 4 weeks so if you are in that area come down and see the guys in action

I have never attended a wheelchair sporting event, but my husband is also a former athlete. He was slated for the Paralympics but didn't take his athletic career that far.
I think devs and wheelchair sport go hand in hand, but many devs don't feel comfortable attending events.

I used to play, but i'm not into sport per se, I only used it for fitness. I kept being pushed to compete in big events, but refused. I don't even own a wheelchair anymore, it was more around the time I had surgery, and was relearning to walk.
I remember one of my teachers recording one of my first unaided walks after two big operations. Her husband was an author, donated me a fairly inspiring book, and included a personal note in it, telling me how well I'd done.

I agree that dev's are very much a part of wheelchair sport without realising their attraction, most the players partners come from volunteers and PA's who support the guys

From 2012-2016 I literally watched every IPC track and swimming championship on YouTube. As well as 2 Paralympic Games (I had no life as a teen). I love watching the Olympics so not only were the IPC games cool to watch it also had that dev factor mixed in. I would love to actually attend an event but I’m super worried someone will ask how I ended up there XD. So there’s my embarrassing fact about me. I think I watched so much because it was hard to find movies or tv with PWDs and a lack of seeing PWDs irl. It wasn’t solely eye candy, I definitely got into the actual sport and it was just an added bonus if I found one or a few of the athletes of that specific event attractive (especially if it was swimming where the guys are shirtless).
Before Oscar Pistorious (can’t spell) went psycho I was so excited to watch the Olympics because i could watch it on the big screen in the living room since my mom loves inspiration porn. Since most of my IPC games watching was on my phone or computer with ear plugs.
Wow that felt weird to type out. I hope in my half asleep mind I didn’t get to weird sounding. Oh well, I guess that will be a later problem when I’m fully awake.

All events are advertised and the general public are always welcomed, lots of people pop in out of curiosity, so you would never find yourself in that embarrassing situation of having to explain why you are there look at womens beach volleyball, all the guys watching have no clue about the sport lol

First off Welcome to PD! Hopefully you didn't just come here to announce the Rugby championship in Sydney.
I have never been to a wheelchair sports event because I actually have no clue where and when they are. I don't think we have a huge wheelchair sports community in this area and if we do I have no idea where they are held and when they happen. So I guess I'm a weird dev because I don't seek out those events. If anyone had any info on this stuff in my area (WA state, Seattle/Olympia area) please fill me in, thank you!

Even though I walk with a limp, in high school, we had a large population of disabled students, and were a "magnet school" to bring others in the area with disabilities in, because there was an OT and PT, plus other trained staff on site, and there was an annual wheelchair hockey tournament I participated in. It's pretty much about as brutal as ice hockey.

I've watched the Paralympics and some wheelchair sports through the years online (and definitely follow some of the teams on Instagram). I like attending live sports events in general, but I never go to any sports events alone. I think it's a more social experience for me? I think if I had friends IRL who were devs, I may have been more apt to seek out these types of events to view in person too. Even when I was single, I don't think I'd ever have been the type to just start going alone or volunteering solo. I would've felt awkward about it unless I had some rationale to get involved beyond simply being a dev.

God, I hated wheelchair basketball with a passion.
Where are all the motorracing devs?
There are only 3 sports: Mountain climbing, motorracing and bullfighting, the rest are merely games.
