So I know I've talked a lot here about my love for Marvel superheroes especially Daredevil but season 3 on Netflix just dropped and I am obsessed. I watched the first episode and it's so devvy I can't stand it. But no spoilers please! It's going to take me a while to watch the whole season probably because I can't just drop everything in my life to binge it in one day. Anyway I have lots of thoughts about DD and superheroes in general.
omg that eye twitch at 1:07 soooo devvy I'm dying
Anyway I have lots more thoughts on deaf Hawkeye but I will leave it here for now. I know at least some of you are fans of comics and superheroes as much as I am.

Oh wait turns out I have more already. So you would think that with the new Netflix season coming out that Marvel would make a big PR move with the comics but noooooo instead we have Charles Soule/Phil Noto ending their run with a 4 issue arc called "The Death of Daredevil." And after that the whole series seems to be ending (at least temporarily). So I know that no one ever stays dead in comics and this is probably some kind of reset but still! I hate this "death of" thing so much. I've been lukewarm on the Soule/Noto run, there have been some good issues but I really don't want a super depressing death story. It's like Marvel wants to fail, and every time they succeed it's by accident.
Anyway here is another amazing super long tumblr post about all the terrible art in DD comics that misrepresents Braille. Also they mention that artist Chris Samnee is the only one who gets it right because he contacted superfan Darediva who helped him out. WOW!! I have "met" her online and she's a dev! So awesome! I knew there was a reason why the Mark Waid/Chris Samnee run was so amazing. Just one of many reasons. It makes me so happy to think a dev was consulted in writing/drawing actual Daredevil comics. Darediva makes cool Braille art which you can buy on Etsy.

I'm still loving the new season of Daredevil but there is one brief moment that bugged me in the first episode. Not a spoiler, I promise. There's a flashback to Matt apologizing to Karen for lying to her about being Daredevil. She says, "So the white cane is just an act?" and he says "Yes." I'm like NOOOOOO because it really isn't, for so many reasons. This article does a much better job than I could explaining it. I am sadly, morbidly certain that this is the last season of Netflix Daredevil we will ever have. Marvel has just launched its own streaming service as a direct competitor to Netflix and has already pulled all its films. Now they are slowly canceling the original shows. Jessica Jones is scheduled for a third season, but Iron Fist and Luke Cage have already been canceled, and they have already said there will be no Defenders second season. Ugh, why can't we have nice things?!
Anyway here is another Texts from Superheroes:

I'm still hoping for Heroes for Hire following the cancellation of Luke Cage and Iron Fist
I'm very much enjoying this season of Daredevil. Bullseye is a fun villain and Fisk is amazing as always.

I'm hoping for Heroes for Hire too, but it's seeming increasingly unlikely. Apparently season 3 of Luke Cage was already starting, and the showrunner showed Netflix outlines for the first 5 episodes but they didn't like it. Seems like Netflix and Marvel are fighting for creative control, and couldn't come to an agreement. Those NYC location shoots are also really expensive. So frustrating! They have also sort of been promising a Daughters of the Dragon series, which would be a team-up with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, but who knows if that will happen either. And hey, Misty Knight is an RAE amputee. The second season of Luke Cage dealt with her adjusting for a few episodes but now that she has her bionic arm, disability is not really a plot point for her anymore. But it could be, with smarter writing. Anyway the signs for Daredevil on Netflix are not good, so far it hasn't been renewed

My bet is that everything will be moved on the new Disney streaming platform. My only hope is that they will keep the same team of writers etc. at least for Daredevil, 'cause the 3rd season was AMAZING. Honestly, I watched it once and then rewatched my favorite bits again. It's genius. All the characters are so well rounded. With the success the Netflix series had, it's unlikely it will be cancelled for good, the problem is: will it stay at the same level of quality if it moves to a different streaming service? Is the gore and violence going to be toned down? I'm trying to stay hopeful but I don't trust Disney... The Soule run is very meh... I miss Waid so much

I so wish that all the Netflix shows would just be ported over to the new Marvel streaming service, but it seems unlikely. The shows are all produced in-house by Netflix. It's not like a regular tv show that can easily switch networks. I'm glad to hear the entire season is great--I'm still working my way through it slowly. No spoilers please! In the comics, Soule has had a few good issues but many bad ones too. I hate the whole grimdark thing, and I really really hate that he is going to kill the character then Marvel will end the series. Come on, DD has had his own title for more than 50 years! Supposedly DD will be in some other titles early next year but we'll see if it's any good. The best we can hope is that they reboot the series and give it to a better team. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee were sooooo good. I enjoyed their run while it was coming out but I've been rereading lately and appreciating it even more. I love that Waid took a lighter tone, and he and Samnee worked really hard to represent Matt's blindness and powers realistically. And they made him look so handsome I wish they could just write/draw DD forever, haha.

About the comics, I’m not afraid about yet another character death in the Marvel universe. It’s a popular character, especially in the last few years with the Netflix series, he’ll be back soon enough, likely a reboot of some kind, hopefully written by someone that does DD justice.
What you say about Netflix/Disney is more worrying... at this point I hope Netflix will manage to get at least another season in.

I binge watched the whole thing in a day and a half and now I feel bereft but I can’t even put into words how much I loved it. No spoilers but I for one am incredibly pleased we went back to ‘angsty-I-hate-god so I’m going to wear tight black with a mask with a sliver of white fabric that’s incredibly hot and be all brooding and dark’ Matt Murdock.

I'm so glad there are others here enjoying Netflix Daredevil as much as I have! I'm still only about halfway through, haha. I'm really making it last.
Anyway I have a lot of thoughts about Clint Barton aka Hawkeye too. If you don't read comics you may be thinking who? That boring character played by Jeremy Renner who was mysteriously missing from the last Avengers movie? Unfortunately the movies leave it out, but in the comics he's deaf. Hawkeye is one of those characters who's been around forever but keeps being rebooted and changed so it's hard to keep track, also the Marvel wiki is a mess and impossible to read. There is a funny and informative post here that explains his deafness in the comics.
Hawkeye had a standalone title by Matt Fraction and David Aja around 2015 where they re-introduce his deafness in a somewhat more realistic way. That series is brilliant even aside from devvyness and I highly recommend it if you haven't read it. It would make a terrific TV series. Not surprisingly, it has inspired a ton of fan fiction, with varying degrees of realism in the portrayal of hearing loss. Even more than blindness, deafness is something that so many authors (pro and fanfic alike) get wrong or hand wave away.
Since the Marvel wiki is such a disaster, I was looking at the site fanlore.org for more information on Clint Barton, and there is indeed a huge entry but the way it was written made me so angry. There are a few anonymous fans who get big quotes even though I don't see any evidence that their opinions are any more widespread or valid than anyone else's. One of them says, "I am not deaf but the way a number of people talk about Clint's deafness on tumblr makes me uncomfortable. I dislike the ways that it has become fanon for people who have not read the comics... It feels fetish-y.... I also dislike that it's directly related to a trend in which Fraction and Aja's Hawkeye is viewed as the only Hawkeye there is where meanwhile spectacular titles influenced by it do not get nearly as much attention. Hawkeye interpretations prior to Fraction and Aja get shafted too."
First of all, those previous interpretations suuuuuuuucked. I made the mistake of buying some of them, including Hawkeye: Blindspot (where he's going blind from a blow to the head). This was supposed to be one of the better titles, but the story was so dumb and dealt with the threatened blindness is such a stupid and superficial way, of course he is magically cured in the end. Also the art is terrible, as if it were drawn by someone imitating Tom of Finland but in a bad way, with the homoeroticism disavowed and sublimated. Fraction and Aja's run was brilliant and deserves all the love.
Second, FUCK YOU anonymous fan for suggesting that only people who have read the same issues as you get to enjoy the character. If you love something a lot, especially if you are female, there will always be someone telling you that you are doing it wrong, that you love it for the wrong reasons or in the wrong way. NO. There is no wrong way to be a fan.
This really makes me angry because of the criticism that the fanfic is "fetish-y." It feels like a direct attack on devs, that we are not allowed to feel sexual attraction to characters with disabilities because that is morally wrong for some reason. Obviously I disagree. It was so weird and alienating to run across anti-dev prejudice in a fanlore web page. I was really not expecting it. But the fanlore page for Daredevil is even worse--it's almost entirely empty except for a comment that the fandom is "small." Hey fanlore, you guys suck.
On the other hand, I have to admit that not all fanfic writers who write about disabled characters are devs, in fact I suspect that a lot of them are not. The hurt/comfort genre in particular seems like it would be devvy but when I read it, it's really different, to me anyway. But maybe that's just my taste, I don't like injury/recovery stories either.

Still no word on future seasons of Daredevil on Netflix, but it looks like the first series for the new Disney streaming service will be a team-up with Falcon and everyone's favorite amputee hero/villain, Winter Soldier: io9.gizmodo.com/report-winter-soldier-and-falcon-may-team-up-for-their-1830115500In the comics, both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes have been Captain America at various points, and since Chris Evans has said he's not doing these movies anymore, there are some interesting story possibilities. The internet ships Steve Rogers-Bucky Barnes so hard but maybe this pairing is the next best thing?

I'm scratching my head at DD season 3, Ep 6. Seems like an opportunity lost.
Also... Damn! I think they've ramped up the violence.
The dev factor is pretty damn high, too. I hope, hope, hope we get more of Charlie Cox.

What opportunity was lost? I thought the fight scene between DD and Bullseye was great. Still slowly working my way through the rest of the season but I'm loving it so far.

It was an opportunity to "prove" he wasn't DD.
But yeah, that fight scene was INTENSE.
I'm loving this. I'm just trying not to feel like it's the end.
Damn Disney.
