The new Daredevil comics series is out this week, and I'm happy to say it's looking really good so far. It's written by Chip Zdarsky, who is the co-creator with Matt Fraction of Sex Criminals. (And even though it's not devvy Sex Criminals is a genius look at relationships, it's really worth reading) Anyway the art on the new Daredevil is nice, and the writing is so much better than it has been in the past few years. I'm not sure why they ended the series for two months, since this isn't even a soft reset, it just picks up with the same storyline, although it's easy to follow even if you haven't been reading the previous series. If you've been longing for more Daredevil, check it out. Also the first issue starts with Matt picking up a girl for a one night stand within the first few pages, reinforcing his status as the biggest player in the Marvel Universe. 😘 Also it includes this panel:

Reviving this thread after watching all of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, starring our favorite arm amp superhero. I enjoyed the series a lot but the dev factor was low. There was one nice moment at the end of episode 4, but that was it. Still, Sebastian Stan is a freaking treasure who has made me love a character I never much cared about. It was delightful to see him get the character development fans have been waiting for, and that has filled a billion pages on AO3. The first two episodes almost felt like reading Bucky fanfic made canon.
In other Marvel news, it's been all but confirmed that Charlie Cox is returning to the MCU in the next Spiderman movie. There's a lot of speculation about whether he will only appear as Matt Murdock or if he will suit up as Daredevil, but either way, I'm so happy that the rights have reverted from Netflix and Disney seems interested in casting him again.
There's also some speculation that Cox as MM/DD will appear in some of the Disney+ shows. There will be a Hawkeye show with Jeremy Renner returning as Clint Barton, and featuring the other Hawkeye, Kate Bishop. And it seems they will use part of the plot from the comics where Clint is injured and loses his hearing. The series will also introduce Echo, a Deaf Native American superhero, so it seems they are serious about the Deaf representation. I'm not a fan of Renner but I'm exited to see how far they are willing to take this.
There are also rumors that Echo might get her own Disney+ show, and possibly that Charlie Cox might show up there too. In the comics, the character Echo first appeared as a love interest for Matt Murdock in "Parts of a Hole" (and if you haven't read it, it's sooo devvy, check it out). I really hope this happens! So much to look forward to!

Glad that you enjoyed Falcon and the Winter Soldier! I thought it was excellent too. Marvel is knocking it out of the park with their Dinsey+ line up. First, WandaVision then this! I really liked Zemo in this show. Who do you think Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine works for?

I thought it was excellent too. Marvel is knocking it out of the park with their Disney+ line up. First, WandaVision then this! I really liked Zemo in this show. Yeah, I loved Wandavision. IMO the writing is smarter and overall it's a way better series than Falcon and Winter Soldier. But word is their filming and editing was somewhat affected by the pandemic, so who knows.
In the comics, Baron Zemo ran the crime circus that Clint was in as a teen before he joined the Avengers. Zemo in the MCU is really different, partly due to the charisma of the actor. Anyway he's clearly going to show up in future series, so maybe he'll be in Hawkeye too?
They're pretty obviously setting up the Dark Avengers. In the comics, Val is also called Madame Hydra, so maybe they are bringing Hydra back, or maybe she's the anti-Zemo, a European aristocrat setting up a team of super villains. Also in the comics Madame Hydra has a torrid affair with Nick Fury. It would be hilarious to see that onscreen, but I doubt it will happen.
Also I forgot to mention, earlier in this thread I was enthusiastic about the DD comics series written by Chip Zdarsky but having read more of it, I can definitively say it suuuuuuuucks.
Grimdark nonsense, retreads of old story beats, just so tedious. I finally unsubscribed because each issue was just so painful.
There was also a new Hawkeye series called Freefall last year that started out really strong then totally fizzled and got canceled. Such a shame, but the deaf representation was basically zero, and the author even admitted he had no intention of putting it in the story.

I agree with you about WandaVision! I was a big fan of Tom King's series and I love all of the classic Avengers and West Coast Avengers stories from the past. Vision and Scarlet Witch have always been my favorite comic book couple. They were one of the first interabled couples I remember noticing. Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are great together! I have to say I really enjoyed Hawkeye: Freefall. I really like Otto Schmidt's artwork and Hawkeye is such a great character. I think both versions of him are great, classic purple suit, and the jeans and t-shirt "Hawkguy" who plays so well off of Kate Bishop. This is an awesome thread! It's so much fun meeting new comic book fans!

Are you reading the current Black Widow book?!
Thank you for this recommendation--I didn't know about it! I read the opening 5 issue miniseries. OMG Hawkeye and Bucky team up to save Black Widow! I like Kelly Thompson, I think she did a fantastic job on the recent West Coast Avengers (also featuring Hawkeye), and I was sorry when that got canceled. I like it even better that the Black Widow series has a really talented female artist who makes her look good but not pornified. But....by the end of issue 5 I was just meh about it. I didn't like the angsty tone. I wanted more of that West Coast Avengers fun. And I have to say neither series was devvy at all. The Deaf representation is basically zero, and the artist doesn't even know how to draw a hearing aid. It's just embarrassing how bad it looked. I know Marvel gets tons of letters from deaf and hard of hearing people saying how important this character is for them, then every writer after Matt Fraction has been like, eeehhhhh...don't know how to deal with that so I'll just ignore it...
Ditto with Hawkeye: Freefall. It was so disappointing. The first two issues were brilliant and funny, then it got angsty, then abruptly ended when the series was canceled. And the author also totally dropped the ball on the Deaf representation too. Weak!
The other thing I really disliked about the latest Black Widow series was that when they brought in a second artist in issue 4 and 5, it was a dude who drew her in the typical pornified way, with her body twisted so you can see her boobs and butt at the same time. Fuck that shit, man! That's not what I signed up for in this title. When they announced the next series, it's with that same artist again, so I'm not sure if I'll bother reading it.

The trailer for the Disney+ Hawkeye trailer is here and omg you guys it looks amazing!!! Love love love that they pivot from boring mopey MCU Clint to the hilarious hot mess Clint of the comics. The series seems to be borrowing a lot from the amazing Matt Fraction comics series, including the iconic fonts, the purple costumes, Lucky the pizza dog, the tracksuit mafia, and so many scenes taken directly from the panels.
And the trailer doesn't give a lot of hints, but Clint seems to be wearing a hearing aid, so maybe they will finally bring the hearing loss aspect to the character in the MCU. Also the series will introduce Echo, a Deaf character who is slated to get her own series on Disney+ soon. And the villain will be Vincent D'Onofrio as the Kingpin from the Netflix Marvel. Will Charlie Cox show up as Matt Murdock? Maybe! He is definitely in the upcoming Spiderman movie, and I'm seeing lots of rumors that he will be in Echo, She-Hulk, and maybe even get his own series again. Oh my heart!

This series looks like it is going to be so much fun! Hawkeye is one of my all time favorite characters. I was sold the moment I saw the track suited thugs from the comics. Kate Bishop was the best of the young Avengers and her friendship with Clint is such a great relationship in the books. The Christmas setting seems perfect as well. I can't wait for this series either.

I just watched the first two episodes of Hawkeye and omg it's SO GOOD 😁 The fun, lighthearted tone is exactly right, with so many details from the comics. Clint is wearing a hearing aid, and they just explain it as hearing loss from being in lots of explosions as an Avenger. There's also a brief moment where he's using ASL with his kids. Echo will be in episode 3, and she will be getting her own series later. Very excited to see where this all goes!

Hey a comic thread! Nice representation, bro.
Daredevil was a great show, it's too bad the other Defenders' shows didn't fare so well.
I was stoked to hear that Oracle would be joining the new season of Titans, played by an amputee, and having a romance with Dick Grayson. Unfortunately the show itself is nearly unwatchable, suffering from the Greg Berlanti syndrome of having main characters repeatedly making awful decisions with no consideration for the team. Drives me up the wall.
Doom Patrol is another DC show that is basically a team of reluctant disabled superheroes. It's pretty out there and campy at times, I wish it was a little less hit or miss with the writing.
Just watched the first Hawkeye episode, really enjoyed it. I'm a fan of Kate Bishop, especially written by Fraction and Thompson.

Yes! Episode 3 is supa devvy! Love love love how they portray Echo so far. And finally we see how hearing loss has a significant impact on Clint's character as well. There was tons of ASL and acknowledgment that Deaf and hard of hearing are not the same. Solid representation all around. The only thing that bothered me was that the close-ups were too tight on the character's faces so often the signing was cut out of the frame. I hate it when they assume that no one watching can understand ASL so it doesn't matter if it's out of frame or there's a cut away while someone is signing. But anyway the character of Kazi seems to have been totally changed from the comics, which is fine with me because he didn't really have much personality. Here he's Echo's best friend and interpreter. So great that they went with having her use ASL exclusively which is definitely not the case in the comics. The actress playing Echo really is Deaf, and has a prosthetic foot, which they also made part of her character. So amazing! She is so good already, I can't wait to see her in her own series. I was stoked to hear that Oracle would be joining the new season of Titans, played by an amputee, and having a romance with Dick Grayson. Oh, I didn't know that! I haven't been watching that show at all. Even Mr DG who will watch almost every comic book tv show said that one was too terrible even for him haha. Doom Patrol is another DC show that is basically a team of reluctant disabled superheroes. It's pretty out there and campy at times, I wish it was a little less hit or miss with the writing. I haven't been watching that one either, but maybe I'll check it out. I'm embarrassed to admit I never got over my teenage Marvel fan identity, I just never read any DC comics
