Freewheel

Question for dudes who use Freewheel or others who may be familiar with this technology: what PSI do you put your wheel on? I find the instructions and Internet are not helping. I just fill mine up until it feels plump, which was about 50 last time I think. But I’m thinking I want to fill it up more. I do my back wheels at 100, and this is for use over shitty pavement that is littered with debris.
Question for devs: Freewheel— sexy, not sexy, or don’t give a shit?

🤔 Post a pic so we can give a more accurate answer 😏 (And no, not a generic Freewheel pic, we all already know how to Google, lol)

Got 2 sexies and one NAWT SEXAYYYY! I’ll remember the not sexy until the day I die. I do long distance pushing on the park trails, greenway, and streets where I live. Tree roots push up the pavement so there are huge bumps I have to wheelie over, and sticks from trees and shit fall down so sometimes I have to slow down so I don’t flip over them. Then I got freewheel and I can just roll over that shit since my casters are raised and I have a big wheel on front. I’ve also used the freewheel when going on unpaved paths. It’s good for gravel, mulch, etc. it detaches easily and most of the time I don’t use it. It adds weight to the wheelchair so you will be pushing harder, but makes for some convenience and can go very fast downhill without worrying about clipping a rock and looking like an asshole as I flip out of my wheelchair and everyone runs up to save me. No one here uses this equipment?

No one here uses this equipment? My partner looked at getting a freewheel because they do seem really popular but just not sure we can justify the cost. I think if he ever got to try one irl then maybe he would see the benefits. Our #1 top wish list choice would be a truly off road electric wheelchair/buggy, there are some amazing ones available but it would be cheaper to buy a car although I think it would hugely increase his quality of life as he is a true outdoors person.

I dig it!! :-P Also- hi! Haven't connected in a while. Glad to see you! Good to see you too! I see you are doing another Nanowrimo. I’ve done exactly 0 of those in the 6 years since we did one haha. I’ve not been writing, but I still read a little bit. Not nearly enough though. @delight does your partner usually use a manual or a power chair? The freewheel is crazy expensive as with all disability equipment. It may be possible he could get a grant from the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation. I got my basketball chair that way, and next time they open up I will try to get moneys for a racing chair. I’m not sure if a freewheel is accessible through these funds, but it’s worth a try. If your partner usually uses a manual chair, the freewheel is good and probably cheaper than the off-road electric one. He can get some good exercise instead of just being pushed with machine. And if he usually uses a power chair for every day, he could also be pushed by you or someone else in a manual chair with a freewheel attachment.

someonerandom he uses a manual chair but he isn’t as young or fit as he used to be, pushing longer distances is already getting hard for him. He is fine most days but I’ve noticed that he gets more exhausted by the effort of wheeling himself if we go out for longer. Sci’s are tough as the years pass, I worry that if he is in a manual chair for more than another few years, he could truly mess up his shoulders for transfers etc. It’s hard enough ageing, let alone ageing with an sci, I’ve been trying to find things (like the freewheel) that will just make things a bit easier as I know he is desperate to avoid the power chair option until he has no choice.

Ohhhh yes that’s what I’m afraid of. I want to eventually be one of those guys who are like 80 and still skinny, doing marathons. I work out my rotator cuffs to slow down their eventual demise, but it has to happen at some point probably. Gonna just try to stay independent as long as possible. I’m still young and I have constant back pain that can be very distracting, so I’m concerned how bad it will be in 20 or 30 years.

I have been thinking about getting a freewheel... but adding weight to the chair would be my main concern. I wish we could test equipment before buying.
Does it help in snow? I get stuck a lot in the winter.
