My disorder deteriorates muscle, so I make sure to do what I can to keep regenerating what atrophy takes away. I can only work out my arms, so I mainly use dumbbells to do curls and laterals. I have to use one arm to brace the other, so it's only one arm at a time.
I also wear compression socks and have to get edema massages regularly. That's the only way I can work on my legs.

You work with your body's ability and don't get discouraged- ever! I've lead chair yoga for residents in a nursing home. Easy to find online and easy to modify to one arm at a time. Just saying...

They always say going to the gym with a friend can be fun and make the work out go faster. Well, for the last two days a friend of mine has shown up at the gym while I was there. Yes, the workout went faster, and a smile on my face as we were joking around, but... I do my weight lifting in timed intervals and a set routine through all the machines. With my friend there, I lost track of what I was doing and forgot to do one of the exercises! The first day, no big deal- I still stretched and nothing was hurting. The second day houever, I started laughing at myself. How easily I get distracted!

I go to the gym pretty regularly - try to alternate weights and cardio. Luckily my gym has an arm bike that I can use for cardio. For weights I mostly focus on upper body and back, have been trying to work in some core exercises but it's hard to figure out ones that can be done effectively without legs.

Bring a band with you and strap them down on the bench?

The body is at its peak form when you have rest intervals in between sets in the same time frame, or you end up not getting the full effect of the workout.

You might not get the full effect of the workout, but perfection is the enemy of the good. I know I can easily make excuses to myself for skipping workouts that start late, go slow, need to finish early, etc. So if going with a friend gets you to be more consistent in the long run it's worth sacrificing some peak form. But if you have no trouble with consistency then it would be a detractor.

Bring a band with you and strap them down on the bench? Oh that's not the difficult part, I meant in terms of most good core exercises having a lot of leg involvement. E.g. planks (require bracing body straight out with legs), hanging knee raises (require lifting knees past 90 degrees against gravity), straight leg lifts (self explanatory lol). I can do crunches and russian twists, but those can easily be bad for your back if done improperly. So I'm still exploring what other options there might be.

I don’t know how your capabilities are, but as a T-12 complete paraplegic I can’t do crunches very well. I do get a strong ab workout from using my ab roller though, and then also have machines at the gym that you lay like doing a sit up, but there is a bar you grab and pull kind of like an assisted sit-up. Those help me a lot too.

I'm enjoying thinking about this conundrum of yours, so if you don't mind, I've been thinking... Can you get your hips off the floor a little while on your belly? You could do raise your chest off the floor. I don't know the name of that exercise. I hate Russian twists- hurts my tailbone.

I think I should be able to do that, but I'll try it out next time I go to the gym. The other options I've come up with, theoretically, are cable crunches (use one of those split rope handles, kneel facing away from the cable, pull handles to shoulders, bend yourself down using ab muscles) and pallof press (typically done standing where you take the cable handle and extend it out perpendicularly and hold for a duration, which uses abs to resist the rotational force afaik). I tried the pallof press previously in my wheelchair, but my brakes need to be tightened so the rotational force just rotated me lol. Next time I'll see if I can do it kneeling or something. It's just a process of experimenting (and ignoring the other gym goers who are probably like "wtf is that person doing" lol)

I think this thread needs a bump, would really like to talk to guys who like to do weight lifting or sports.
In my new place that I live, I cannot have a pull up bar, so I’ve been doing lots of rows to at least hit my lats some while I’m working my traps and back delt. It’s just not the same though …. Until today. I just discovered the dumbbell pullover, and my lats feel fucking shredded. I think tomorrow I might be more sore than when I haven’t done pull-ups in a while and do a bunch. Very exciting.
Also, what are your proteins? I am vegan, and recently added a 20 gram protein powder to my day, for a little extra since I do heavy weights. I think this is going to help a lot. Also: it tastes really yummy!

Would you hang out with a friend who shows up 2 hours late? What about if he didn't show up at all? No, friends do not treat friends that way, Right? My workout is my friend, I do not miss a day, and I show up on time. That is how I motivate myself to workout every other day.
